Unhappy changing third brake light

I have a 97 explorer sport AWD 4.0 SOHC and I'm planning on changing the third brake light, which has water building up in it. My questions: 1.)does the moulding around the assembly have to be removed or is there another way to change it? 2.) is it a dealer item only? Any and all help would be appreciated...thanks.

On a '97 you need to remove the trim moulding which requires drilling out the rivets. Not too difficult. I replaced the rivets with small stainless steel screws. This makes removing the trim in the future much easier. The light assembly uses neon and is quite pricey (~$150 from the dealer). You may be able to find one of the Internet dealers to sell it to you cheaper.

Another idea is to use the light assembly and add a row of LEDs. I haven't done this but would consider it if I had to replace the neon assembly. It would take some fabrication but shouldn't be too tough. You would need to bypass the ballast and wire direct from the 12v source.
