I just got home from re-routing the CCV towards the back of the truck - and holy lots of smoke. I never expected it to be quite like that. I ran the 3/4" heater hose back the driver-side frame and mounted a canister behind the transfer case, on the frame. Then on top of the canister I mounted a regular filter that would push into as gasser valve cover (kinda looks like a mini k&n) and on the bottom made a drain plug so I can drain any oil that might collect. I started the truck after I was all done and as soon as I did the smoke (I guess acutally more like oil mist) started wafting out of the filter.
Is this what you others are having with the CCV mod or should I try something else with the end of the heater hose - other than my canister/filter set-up??
I would really hate to undo all the work I just did - but I can't say that I like the "smoking underside of the truck" look.
Yea I ran 3/4 heater hose the whole way to my canister.
Also - I just went back outside and started the truck and then looked under with a flashlight. It kinda looks more like a steam than smoke - no sooner than it wafts out of the filter and it almost seems to evaporate. I wonder if I'm seeing more 'casue it's kind-of cooled off tonight (probably about 60*)????
I was just going to suggest that temps may be making it look excessive. I must remind myself that temperatures here range from 85 at night to 120 daytime..........
Hmm..... bypass your canister thing and breather filter and check it.
I put a couple type connector in mine at the lowest point in the hose run (for drainage and inspection purposes) and it didn't leak any oil out of the hose.
Thanks Heat - I'll have to pull my hose off the canister and see what it's doing right out of the hose tomorrow. And it'll be warmer then too so I can see how much it is temperature related.
If you lose the collector and just run it out the back (with or without the filter) you'll notice it a lot less. I run mine open to atmosphere and it doesn't drip.

Yea but dang it I spent an hour welding up that stupid collector canister.
I guess I'll have to try a few more options. I'm pretty sure I won't run all that crap through my intake again - that's for darn sure!!

i run mine open as well (no filter)it comes out in the middle of the truck behind the gas tank and i dont notice it at all. i will say when i first did it i dumped it out just after the x-fer case and i could smell it alot and i did notice some smoke at times.
Mine is coming down under the driver's door. Open ended, no filter. It's all the hose that I had at the time. Yes it smokes and my wife wrinkles her nose whenever it goes her way. So I am going to extend it all the way back to the rear axle someday. I may get creative and weld in a flange to attach it at the top of the exhaust tip, out of sight of course.
What you are seeing is normal. The first time I noticed mine was a couple of days later on a cold start up. Cooler temps will allow you to see it more and the first start up of the day too. Nothing to worry about, but as heat said make sure you are getting good flow as not to start blowing seals!
Thanks guys - I just checked it again - its about 85* or more outside and I can barely see anything coming out of the filter - so it must just be the temperature thing. I think I'm gonna route it back the truck farther when I have time - maybe have it dump out around the spare tire somewhere. Thanks again for the help!!
Cat,
I did the same thing at first. I ran it so it dumped near the drivers door and it puffed a few little clouds last winter while I was in it taling on my cell phone in a parking lot.......I panicked and felt like a fool after I saw what it was.
I routed it down the drivers side frame rail, alongside the fuel tank and near the spare.
Cat_man, I just did it as well last friday. I noticed alot of smoke on the first drive and now its minimal. I added a filter to the end of the hose wich I mounted in a gatorade bottle that has the bottom cut off to protect the filter from water and whatnot. Anyhow I have it exiting a few inches from the spare tire. Just FYI the tread on my spare now has oil deposites all over it in the spot where its aimed at. Im gona redu my gatorade bottle jimmy rig setup thing so the oil residue that would have been in the engine compartment and the turbo doesnt get all over the spare. After seeing the amount of oil that passes through I cant belive that somone designed our rigs this way. Its amazing.
