I just took my '78 with 351M in for inspections today, it has not had a state mandated inspection since '99. It failed to pass inspection because I did not have the fresh air intake to the air filter. I bought this truck a couple of years ago from someone who replaced the air filter cover/ box with one from a 429. It does not have the fresh air intake required by state law. Where can I get on? What model trucks can I pull one from in a junkyard? I have 15 days to pass inspection before I have to pay again.
Any snorkel from a 73-79 truck should work. They may have only been installed in later trucks though, so I would concentrate on 78-79 models. In a pinch you might be able to fab something up with sheet metal and pop rivets. The air intake snorkel goes to the passenger side of the radiator mount. As for the hose, any auto parts store should have them.
I found the Air Filter housing with the snout - to which I will attache the piping to grill. Does anyony know if there was actually a fitting on the grill or is the shop I took BOB - (BOB is what my daughter named the truck) to see mistaken in believing that there is a connection behind the grill?
Yes, there's a plasic piece that mounts to the grill and goes under the battery tray and the flex hose attaches to it just behind/below the battery. Check a salvage yard, most 78-79s have them - or you could just make something similar...
I have looked in a couple of salvage yards - and the pickins are slim. I have only found one truck with the front grill intact. I have fond several in various states of torn apart. I have been looking for something between the battery and the grill. Is this plastic part actually under the battery tray?
It would be great to see a picture. If I have not found anything by the weekend, I will just fab something with sheetmetal and pop rivits.
Robt... thanks for the picture. I was looking for a little short plastic cone - looks like I need something quite a bit longer. I will keep looking, but for now - I will fab something using Lowe's parts just to pass inspection.
Thanks all for your suggestions/ help. Inspection tonight.
The 1978 Ford manual shows the fresh air inlet to be about 8 - 10" long. It fits between the battery tray and engine and is attached by a screw on the radiator support and a screw on the right fenderwell. It has a 90deg bend on both ends. It looks like all the engines use the same type connection except for the 300 I-6.
so just heat the manifold and rub the candle at the head of the bolt? or do I heat the manifold and engine block, head really, and ruub the candle on the crack between the two?
