The rear gears in my '77 are trashed and I need to get them repaired. I am trying to figure out what type axle and gears I have so I can order a new ring gear and pinion.
Could someone help me ID them from the differential tag.
I actually figured the 3.54 out. My problem is identifying the rear end type. I don't know whether it is a Dana 44, 60, 70..... The truck is a F-250 so I'm pretty sure it is not a Dana 44. Is the only solution to actually pull the cover and measure the ring gear size.
I'm not real familiar on the differences of the Danas but from reading these forums the 44 is up front and the 60/70 is a rear. Now what I've done in the past is count the bolts in the dif cover and look at the shape and match it to the corresponding gasket pictured in a parts catalog. Hope this helps
more than likely it's gonna be a Dana 44 up front and Dana 60 out back that was a very popular combonation in that time. Hope this helps. i got a 78 f-250 ranger explorer 4x4 and thats what i got on mine and a few freinds have that as stock.
The Rearend stock in 73-79 were the following:
FRONT: D44, D60
REAR: D44, D60, D61, Ford 9"
the d44 was a 10 bolt with 8-1/2" Ring Gear
the d60 was a 10 bolt with 9-3/4" Ring Gear the rear cover part number is 45-1767
the d61 was a 10 bolt with 9-3/4" Ring Gear the rear cover part number is 45-1766
the Ford 9" was a 10 bolt it a a round cover and is very different from the Dana Axel
The Dana 44 REAR & Ford 9" were only available with the F-100/F-150
The Dana 60 and Dana 61 REAR was only available with the F-250
My book doesn't say anything about F-350's of that era for some reason
D44 rear came in these ratios: 3.07, 3.54, 4.09
D60 rear came in these ratios: 3.54, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56
Ford 9" came in these ratios: 3.00, 3.25, 3.50, 3.70, 4.11
