79 f150 swapped engine

i have a 79 f150 that has had an engine swap. after some research i have a 460 engine out of an 73 lincoln .this will not pass state inspection. it has no pollutin controlls on it at all. i heard i could swap the intake from a 76 or newer engine one with an egr valve. my question is would that work. would like to get her running again. davidtgreen150

What state are you in, it will fly here but might be tough in some states.

I have the same issue. There are a lot of responses in this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...es-trucks.html If you are Ca., you are in for some headaches. From my research so far, I have found that the main issue is the GVWR of your F150 not matching up with the required GVWR needed for that size engine. In other words, the 79 F150 never came with a 460 because of the weight rating. The F250 and F350 have higher GVWR ratings and therefore the 460 was an option.

Having said that, some have implied that if you put all the smog items that came on a 79 460, a smog referee might certify it. So far though nobody has posted up an actual example of this happening. I am waiting for somebody to post up their experience but I suspect that if somebody actually got lucky and had a ref smog their swap, they don't want to give up the identify of the ref. They may be concerned that their experience was unusal and it could be rescinded or something.

I am debating myself on acquiring all the smog items that would be on a 460 in 1978 and then just spinning the big prize wheel and hoping the smog ref kisses me on the forehead. I would be pissed though to spend the money and have the ref tell me that the 460 will never qualify no matter what I do to it and to go back to the 351 that came in the rig.

you could get a 460 in a two wheel drive back then not an option for 4x4 though. i thought the big deal on the smog inspection was getting a motor that was the same year as the vehicle or newer and had all the emmisions equipment on it. i'm glad i don't have to pass those b^//$#!+ tests here in illinois.people all over america have small block jeeps that are registered so there has to be a way around it

That's quite true, except...

You could not get a 460 engine in a 1978/1979 F150 sold new in CA.

You could not get a 460 with 4WD (or with a manual trans) until 1983...and then only in F250/350's.

US/Canada: The last year the 460 was available in F150's was 1979 (except CA).

If the 460 engine was available in 1978/79 CA F150's, I woulda got one. Instead, I had to settle for the 400 when I bought my new '79 F150 Super Cab Lariat.

LMAO I bought a new 79 F250 and I sure would have hated to try to pull the 35 foot travel trailer I had with a 302, I did have 3.55 gears though.

isnt california bankrupt and were going to sell them back to mexico next week? j/k. i didn't catch the part where he said he was in ca, cause i don't think he said that. but whenever you talk emmissions you have to talk california because those palmtree hugging, seaweed salad eating, winoes cry about that kind of stuff and influence other states to pass rediculous laws. i personally think that if you repower an old rig with any already existing motor, regardless of what one you choose, your being "green" because instead of new vehicles being produced and all of the air pollution produced by manufacturing said vehicles your just making relatively the same amount of pollution that you were already making. i think them hippies call it recycling

I've lived in CA for over 65 years. So far, I've never hugged a palm tree, I don't eat seaweed salad or drink wine...to excess.

I also breathe air that is 95% cleaner than it was before before CA began passing emission laws in 1960.

Fact: In the 1950's, the smog was so thick here in LA LA Land, that you were lucky to be able to see more than two blocks in any direction.

Fact: There are more vehicles in ONE CA county alone (San Bernardino), than there are in 46 of the 50 states COMBINED!

Fact: Ca residents, on average...own at least 1.3 vehicles.

I'm not crazy about the emission laws, but the facts are: With over 50 million + residents (not counting illegals), that own over 50 million + vehicles, emission laws are necessary here.

You want to see how bad pollution can be without emission laws? Visit Mexico City....if you can find it...that is.

If the climate here in LA LA Land was as bad as it is in Illinois, we wouldn't have so many communes so close together, or so many residents.

Fact: It hasn't snowed in LA LA Land since 1949.

Fact: Vehicles here in LA LA Land last years longer than they do in Illinois...because with no snow, no salt on the roads, there's no rust problems.

Fact: My family moved to LA LA Land in 1933...from Chicago.

Think about alla this jazz while you're drivin' down the road while your floor boards are rustin' thru, while the fenders are a flappin' and watch out, because...

You never know when the fuel tank might fall off onto the road!.

fact: i've never lost a gas tank yet, maybe a bumper while doing a doughnut
fact: i've never had fenders flap, but a hood did blow open going down the road and tore inner fenders out, i have had bedsides that flap.
fact: i like the holes in my floorboards, they help while offroading. they let me see what others can't.
fact: i love to argue and i think your fun to do it with
