Got the truck back with the above mods. The Y-pipe was basically cut out, and a new one installed. Same pipes from exhaust manifolds, and same 3 in. pipe to cat. The stock muffler was replaced with a BIG Magnaflow. I don't want a loud truck.
A slight loss in power just off the line, no biggie though. A considerable gain from around 2800 on up. Big diff. in passing power when the trans kicks down. Really the kind of gains I was hoping for. The truck had PLENTY down low, but seemed to be flat up top. Now it pulls much better, with a definite surge in power around 2800-3000. All in all I like the diff.
It's got a slightly throaty sound when accelerating, but no louder than stock while cruising. The Y-pipe change DID bring out the exhaust flutter sound though. It was barely noticable before, now at certain RPM's you can definetly hear it.
Motochris........how much did the shop charge you to change the y-pipe? I had a shop do my muffler (FM40) and asked about the pipe. The guy told me it would run about $200. Just wondering if that is about the norm.

The custom Y-pipe charges were about $130, basically 2 hours labor charge. It could have cost more if I wanted it from the exhaust manifolds to the CC, but I just wanted the problem area fixed. It's really all gonna depend on your muffler guy. I've had complete dual exhaust run from front to rear with mufflers for $350 on a different vehicle, and I've also had a custom system (all mandrel bent and tight to the body) done on a Pro Street car for $1400. If your happy with the results, and the work is good, you pay what you pay. Basically I got a high flow Y-pipe and good muffler installed for less than any Cat-back system. Thats a better deal in my book.
Thanks for the reply. I am probably going to check a couple of shops before I decide to stick with this guy or not. I don't like going to too many shops to do work cause if something goes wrong somewhere down the line.......the finger pointing gets started. If I stick to one place i only have to take it to one place even if it runs me a little more to do the work.
I know of one guy in town who did had his changed and had nothing but trouble afterwards. He kept getting trouble codes, and ended up going back to a factory "y" in the long run.
