Exclamation NP205 or NP203????

Hey all, i have a question for you. I just bought a 1978 F-250 Ranger Explorer from a really good friend with 112,850 documented miles and i want to know 2 things.
First:
i can't figure out which transfercase it has? The pattern is 2L-N-2H-4H. Also can anyone give me a example of what i would use each for?

Second:
I also can't figure what front axle i have. it's probably stamped but i can't find the stamp, i know where it should be, but it's really dirty and grimey. What axle do you think I could have. My rear is a Dana 60 4.10 Limited Slip. So i know it has to have a 4.10 up front.

Thanks,
Aaron

I think you have an NP205. I would bet the front position is 4L though, not 2L. As far as the front axle, if the center doesn't look like the back center, then I would guess it is a 44. The 60 has a "60" cast into the bottom right web of the housing, but I haven't seen anything that identifies a 44 other than knowing what one looks like. Hope this helps you, Ted

Another way to tell what axle you have is to measure the tube diameter. The d44 is 2.75" and the d60 is 3.12". If the gvw is 8500 it is more than likely going to be a d44.

Ted is correct. You have an NP205 and the first position is 4L. An NP205 reads:
4L
N
2H
4H

NP203 reads:
LOCK
HI
N
LO
LOCK

As for your front axle, it is probably a Dana 44HD since not many of the F250s came with a Dana 60 up front. If it is a Dana 60 it will have kingpins rather than balljoints. King pins will have 4 bolts that hold the top and bottom caps into the steering knuckles.

Ill agree you should have NP205....As for your axle the easiest way for me to tell is to take a tape measure out to it and measure the inspection cover across the recess for the ring gear, from top to bottom, a D44 measures 10 1/4" while a D60 measures 12 1/2". A D44 also has a rounder shape to the inspection cover, IMO.

PS: Indybroncoman- I read in an offroading mag that about 1/3 of 1978(and earlier) F250's came with a D60 up front, so they're more common than you think. In 1979 the D60 was less common up front under an F250 because Ford offered the F350 in a 4wd model, with the D60 front axle as a standard.

thank you all!!!!! my axel code is B4R so i don't know. my trans is G, i know that it's a c6 cause i don't believe any other A/T was offered in my year of 1978. At least i know that my transfer is a NP205. i believe the front axel is a more round cover. i i couldn't find a stamp on it i thought all dana's had stamps but i guess not. thank you again for the info.

Personally, I use 2h for daily driving, 4h for snowy roads, and 4l for offroading. I have a manual, so it is easier on the clutch to use 4l and run the upper tranny gears, going down to 1 and 2 when it is required.

Like Ted suggsted, drive it in 2H for normal driving, 4H for on-road driving in severe weather, and 4L for off-road situations......
