I changed the fluid in my Mazda 5 speed today. I could not take the crummy shifting anymore. I had intended on running Redline but no one local carries it. So I picked up 3 quarts of Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle ATF. The fluid is semi synthetic and claims to meet Dexron III, Mercon, Mercon V standards and almost anything else that does not require type F. The difference is unbelievable. It shifts so much better over the Valvoline ATF which was only in there two years and about 22,000 miles. You may want to consider this fluid in your ZF.
Go with Motorcraft Mercon Synthetic. Good product, good value, OEM spec.
I called the "stealer" about the right fluid to use in this flakey E4OD and he said their Motorcraft Mercon was the same as Dextron/Mercon-lll and was $1.91 a quart but he didn't mention Mercon synthetic. I was going to use Castrol @ $2.70 a qt. .Figuring the markup that dealers use, I guess their product is worth about $.90 on a compareable market and I don't want it in my tranny. I always thought a Motorcraft product was the best for a Ford product but I also believe we get what we pay for. After reading some of these posts I thought it would be best to go with Mobile One and take the leak gamble. Now Rockledge tells us Motorcraft has a synthetic. You guys are sure confusing me.. I don't care about a few bucks extra for a PM fluid change because I do care about replacing the tranny. I've got about 35,000 miles on the transmission. It was a new replacement at 18,000 M. ...Thanks..
I was (am) under the impression that Motorcraft Synthetic Mercon is actually the Ford-recommended fluid for the ZF-5 tranny in a Ford Diesel, no?
In any event, as can be seen from this TSB (Article No. 01-15-7), there is definately a Synthetic Mercon ATF (Part # XT-2-QSM), and it is even the recommended fluid in a couple of trannies.
As BlueRanger points out, it's probably a little harder to find. I bet some dealerships don't even keep it in stock. But if you go to the parts counter and order it, you can get it.
