I see all this talk about exhaust systems so I crawled under my truck to see how mine is set up.
There are two pipes coming off the manifold. They connect together into one pipe. Right before they Y together there is a short pipe connecting the two with the sensor (O2?). The single pipe goes to the muffler and then out to the back. I'm guessing it's 2" diameter.
Where's my cat? Is what looks like a muffler a cat/muffler?
Does this sound stock or has somebody changed it?
If I cut the two pipes right after the sensor and bring them back through 2 mufflers will I get more power and/or gas milage?
We don't have emissions testing, but I'd like to keep it "legal"

Hey, I own a 91 F150 4.9L 5spd.
My truck actually has 2 catalytic converters.
1st one is the union of the two exhaust pipes from manifold, just behind where you said your O2 sensor is.
2 pipes go in 1 comes out, should have some kinda shield on it.
2nd one is just in front of muffler.
Stock muffler is round I'd say 10-12" and about 24-30" long.
If you don't have something that looks like that then the other part you have is just a cat. converter.
I talked to a local muffler shop. He said that he couldn't take off the cat if there was one, but if has already been removed (which it apparently has) he could do the work without replacing the cat. He said if everything was good to the muffler I should replace the muffler with a "one pipe in, two pipes out" muffler. He said that would be just as good as running two pipes and mufflers and be a lot cheaper. I'd like a little sound, but mostly looking for a little more power and better gas milage. Will the 1 in 2 out muffler he's talking about do this?
Bubba Shrimp,
I don't know what the reason for the two pipes out muffler is, unless you just like the looks of duals, if they breathe better than a large diameter single exit on something like a flowmaster, I was not aware of it. Muffler guy probably knows or mabey someone else does. I left my front cat intact and gutted the back cat, then installed a 3" inlet/ 3" outlet turbo muffler from summitt racing and 3" exhaust pipe all the way to behind rear wheel. I like the sound and performance is good.

is that for real, 5 cats???? I asked a buddy (reliable source?)
who has a Ranger Splash, He said that some are probably resonating chambers to cut down noise or something. I sure don't know for sure.

Your truck definately does not have 5 cats. That doesn't even make sense. Here is a normal set-up:
Exhaust manifold
H pipe with 1 cat for each manifold (2 cats)
Exhaust pipe
Muffler
Exhaust pipe
I have an '03 F150 - that's the exact set-up. Yours should look similar - also you may be mistaking a "reducer" for a cat. Not really sure about that though!
