Hello
This is my first manual steering truck, and i am wondering how much "play" in the wheel is okay and when it needs to be fixed. When you steer it it has about 6 inches where the wheel turns and the tires do not. If this is a problem, what needs to be replaced in the steering box, how tough is this to do, and finally for how much. Or is it just easier to get a different steering system. It seems pretty loose but i am wondering if this is not normal. Thanks
Chippen
Six inches sounds a bit excessive. Most likely your old Ford is like mine and just about every moving part in the front end should be rebuilt such as the tie rod ends, king pins, spring pins and bushings, and drag link internals for safety. Before I stuck several hundred bucks into a new steering box make sure the sector adjustment screw is tightened up right (not too tight). I replaced everything on my front end except the steering box and it drives great. One thing about my box is that it has more play the further off center the wheels are turned which is good because excessive play is going to be noticed a lot more going straight ahead than when you're turning. Good Luck!
Mick has given good advice, also check your draglinks, there is some adjustment on them. Mine has a similar amount of play and no adjustment made it better. I replaced the box.
