New user "Cat Question"

Hey guys my first post,

Just got back from the dealer, My right cat is shot, $600.00 plus labor is too much Need help finding sources for a new/used converter, thinking about going to a junk yard but I don't know if this is a bolt on aplication or if welding will be involved.

I'm wondering how long I can go without replacing it, any help or opinions appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich

First thing you need to do is find out why it failed so soon . Did the mechanic @ Ford not give you a reason ? Id stay away from junkyard parts of that nature , you may be buying another problem . There are other places that you can purchase a convertor & have it installed for less .

LAST EDITED ON 23-Jan-01 AT 12:54 PM (EST)[p]Paul thanks for the reply.

The service guy at Ford said that it was probably running rich, the O2 sensor didn't come back with a bad code or anything, that's the only thing he could think of, I did have one of sensors changed at 60,000 mi. I've got new plugs and wires about 4,000 miles on them, the thermostat was changed 2 weeks ago. any other ideas why I'm running rich or what I should start checking.

thanks again.
Rich

It seems to me they should have investigated why it was running rich because your problems will only continue until the cause is found . Your engine uses 4 O2 Sensors . Its possible you have a fuel pressure problem . Id suggest finding a mechanic that is OBD II competant & have them find the cause of the rich running condition before you end up replacing another convertor .

Check your fuel pressure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Passenger side, schrader valve for gauge attachment.

The fuel pressure regulators go bad all the time. The vehicle will have 100 psi RUNNING!! Far more that the 35-40 psi normal pressure. The pressure regulators cost about $130.00 from the dealer. Takes about 10 minutes to change.

Is that 100psi when they go bad or 30-40psi when they go bad?

Perhaps it ran rich long ago, then got a tune up since then. I wonder if the check-engine light was ever on for an extended number of weeks in the past. I too, would want to know why the cat went bad.

Regarding cat prices. I had one installed at a chop shop. Ya know, a local muffer shop that does discount work because they cut and weld exhaust parts to fit, instead of buying the bolt-on dealer parts. It cost about 1/3 the dealer price, but was only warranty for 1 yr instead of 100,000 miles or whatever.
