I just purchased a C6 and was wondering if the 'knock down' lever must be connected to the speed/carb or can i get away with not connecting it, and just don't let the tranny shift when passing.
Did anyone ever drive without it connected and how does that effect the ride?
I drove a '74 Pontiac (TH350) and a '77 Dodge pickup (727) with the kickdown disconnected. Basically you just lose "passing gear" but you can manually downshift if you need to.
I drove my truck for several months without the kickdown connected and it drives just fine . . . though I really appreciated it once I installed the Lokar cable kickdown. I just punch it to the floor when I want to pass and it drops to 2nd. But like Mike said you can always do this manually, it just kind of takes away from the whole purpose of driving an automatic.
The only way it will downshift automatically it with the kickdown rod or by slowing down to get enough vacuum to do it, as in when you stop it will go back to 1st. If you can't get it to shift right with the rod by adjusting it at the carb, you probably have a problem brewing.
My truck has never had the kickdown attached...it will downshift when i slow drasticly, stop, or if im at o r below 1600 RPM....which isnt alot....I would like to connect it though...i still just look at the arm and wonder HTF it goes on. But, the truck seems to run fine without it.
One end goes on a lever between the throttle and carb and the other goes on the transmission. There should be a small shaft sticking out of both mentioned ends. All you have to do is turn it one way and if it won't fit, turn it around.
