C6 noise, Thrust washer?? Need advice.
The trans was rebuilt by a local tranny guru in January of this year, added a **** kit, etc. Recently I began to hear a "bad bearing sound" and noted there to be vibration in the T-case lever under moderate throttle, and also a "clack" when shifting from reverse to drive, etc. I assumed it was my 205 T case going bad because it has leaked from the front & rear outputs for about a year. Yesterday, I had a good donor T case swapped in, and it made the same noise.
I still had the interior "hump cover" off, so the noise was magnified without the carpet. After my mechanic (not the tranny guy) and I drove it, we determined that the noise was coming from the C-6, not the T-case. We had a large pry bar touching the trans with the plastic end to out ears. Definitely coming from the trans. My mechanic is a knowledgable guy, but not a trans expert. He guessed that it may be a thrust washer problem. The "clack" when shifting from drive to reverse is rather loud, and it makes the same noise when upshifting automatically. I called the trans guy last night & explained the noise. He lives a few miles away and will listen to it tonight. He stated that off the top of his head, it could be a bad thrust washer, and he has seen transmissions go 50K plus miles when making noise.
The truck is an off-road only vehicle, but I do drive it around 80 miles to and 80 miles from our trailrides on an average of twice a month. I can live with the noise, but I'd hate for it to let go in the middle of nowhere. I'm wanting to take it out this weekend and run two trails that are very difficult, and they are the only ones that I haven't got to run in my 3 years in out off-road club. I hope he "OK's it" for this weekend. While on the topic of C6 problems, here's my question:
Has anyone else had a similar sound/nosie coming from their C6? Did it grenade on you? Any information is appreciated.
Thanks,
Buford
