There are a few differences between the 67-72 and 73-79 colums. From the outside they look mostly the same but the internal wiring sucha as horn kit and turn signal switches are quite different. You can use the guts out of the late model colum and them in the older colum and buy a new switch form obsolete ford in oaklahoma. I have hered of bad experiences in trying to rewire the late model colum. If a tlit is deisred you can alway look for on out of a passanger car of the same time period.
I put power steering into my 69 from a 74 and it was a straight bolt in swap. I had to use the later model steering column as the power steering box is longer than the manual, but it bolted in with no mods to any of the attaching points. The only difference was the wiring which I took out of the plastic connector and plugged into the one from the 69 column. The wires each have a little tab on them that has to be compressed and the wire will pull out the back side. The wires are not all the same colour, but I was able to puzzle it out. The big difference was the 69 has the emergency flasher switch in the glove box, so I had to leave those wires off the column plug. But everything worked when I was done and I did not have to splice any wires.
Just to be clear, in '78 the collar around the col. is plastic and looks different than the '77 and earlier. I personally don't like the look as much, but it will swap over directly once you figure out the wiring.
