Differences between '71 steering column and 73-79?

I really need to get my old Ford on the road again. The existing steering column has problems and I need to replace it (it's missing parts so a rebuild isn't possible). The question is, is the wiring the only thing different between the pre-73 and 73-79 columns? The F250 I have is an auto tranny with power steering, 2WD. Finding a '71 column is just about impossible in this area, but 73-79 parts are everywhere.

Now that I think about it, putting a tilt column in would be really nice as well, if they were available on the 73-79 (or 73-77) columns.

79Driver is correct from what I can tell. I'm also looking for a new col, but for a 4x4 with auto and I think the 77 and earlier works for me. I think '78 was the first year for tilt.

Anyone absolutely sure about the tilt, and if the later column will work in the early trucks?

Tilt's were first available in 78 .
The 78/79 tilt will fit but you have to change some wiring for the neutral start/BU lights switch.

There is NO Difference between a 2x4 or 4x4 steering column with Auto trans.

The hook-up to the *steering box from the column* is the only thing that's different.

If your search has come up empty for one, contact me privately.

Would one from an E150 work? I have one available, wiring and all, with tilt.

Check out this website. I have not bought anything here, but it is a potential.
