I put new glow plugs in today. Still a pain in the *** to start. GPC has 12.3 volts to it(hot side) and 6 volts on the out side (with switch on start)that has the metal ribbon on it. WTS light comes on for about 3 to 5 secs like it always has, its like it never made a difference. I knew the GPs were bad to start with it. But I don't know the correct voltage on the outside of the GPC and I only have 3 or 4 volts at the plugs Is this correct?
They are autolites. I'm on a budget and couldn't afford the Beru's. But they wouldn't burn up on the first start. There is something wrong with GPC I believe or the GP wiring harness. Any trouble shooting pointers other than not using ZD9 is your reason for a hard start. I've read all threads on here I could find about this but didn't see anything about correct voltage readings.
Thanks
I checked the GP they are all still good but still and a pain to start the WTS came on for about 8 secs this time but still took 3 times to get it to start at 10 sec cranks a piece
i have seen way to many sets of autocrap glow plugs burn out after one start. and a few that burned out before even firing the engine once. they should be banned from selling glow plugs.
and i bet you paid the same thing for those autocrap plugs than you could get motorcraft plugs for too. rock auto has the ZD-9's for $9.17 each
before i ruled the glow plug controller bad, i would put the proper glow plugs in to see if that is truly the problem.
these controllers are designed to work with the motorcraft/beru plugs. the other manufacturer plugs will not work properly.
i have seen people waste all kinds of money throwing parts at these engines and finally bring it to me. i pull the garbage glow plugs out and put ZD-9's in and sent it home with the people swearing i did magic to it because they simply refuse to believe it was just the wrong glow plugs that was the problem all along.
on mine I had voltage, but some of the wires were pretty fried. Fixed all the GP wiring, works fine. I hope I put Motorcraft plugs in, but I don't remember.
Take those Autolites out and return them RIGHT NOW.
Follow my steps carefully and I can help you...
1: Take those out and return them
2: Go on advance auto order 8 Motorcraft/Buru ZD-9 plugs and 1 motorcraft FL1995 oil filter
3: Type in Code TFT41
4: Pay 7.07 each for the ZD9s and 6 Bucks for the filter
5: Install and watch magic happen
