Need upgraded trans
I have an 1988 f-150 with a 302 engine, and its a 4 speed. Now this 4 speed has granny gears and is shifts like a truck. What im looking for is a different transmision to put in my truck, but i dont know where to start. So any help on if i can change and rebuild the transmission, or if i have to buy an entire different settup. Please tell me if you know anything on what i should do, or have done. thanks

Well, if you don't mind changing the cross member, and various other things, a ZF found in the F250 and up is a good choice. Has the low granny gear like yours, but four more gears on top of that with a decent overdrive. The S5-42 can handle 420ft/lbs of torque too, so its not a "toy" transmission at all.

It's hard to give recommendations for what you should do when you don't tell us what you are planning to do with the vehicle.
The transmission you have is a solid, tough as nails, reliable unit - why do you want to get rid of it?

well i just rebuilt the engine and added over a hundred 100 hp, and im not that smart about gears soo i just need some help with that. Also im young and want my truck to run alot smoother and supposibly faster, soo if i can change out my trans to be equal with my engine now, then i know that it will run alot faster. I hope you are getting what i am trying to say
