Tool box mounting question

I found a tool box I like at Tractor Supply for about $200. Its a "chest" type box in black diamond plate. Anyone that has a similar box, did you do anything to mount it to the bed? I saw one guy had his bungeed to the loops in the bed(the box has side handles). Just wondering if anyone has done any further mounting to keep an empty box from moving around.

I have a chest tool box too. You may not want to drill holes in your new truck, but thats about the most secure way to mount it, unless you plan on taking it off and on the truck. I used 3 bolts with large washers and a small iron plate over each hole on the inside of the toolbox floor. The iron plate spreads the force out since the toolbox floor is pretty thin. Just be carefull where you drill and make sure you don't hit anything on the underside of the bed and use silicon to seal it up. Hope that helps.

I, too, have a black chest from TSC. I have not mounted mine yet. It came with self-tapping screws and the box has two pre-drilled holes in the bottom. But, I want to be able to remove it with 'ease' at any time. So, I got a piece of angle iron cut and hope to get the hardware (bolts, flat washers, lock washers, wingnuts, etc.) this week. I'll have the angle iron screwed down to the bed (behind the chest) and then have the toolbox bolted to the angle iron using wingnuts inside the toolbox. My current hiccup is finding stainless steel hardware. Home Depot, etc. doesn't carry what I need. So, I hope to visit a bolt shop (specialty hardware) this week. Make sense? Once it's actually done, I'll put up pictures on my gallery page.

That sound like a good idea, Gordo. However, I would suggest you use two pieces of angle iron, one on each end instead of just one along the back. Two anchor points would make it much more secure in the event of an accident or hard braking.

Thanks for the info guys, I think I will go pick that box up tomorrow (if they are open). I had figured drilling through the bed was the cleanest/most secure way for the install. Tying the box to the bed loops works and makes it easy to remove...but it looks like a tool box tied to bed loops! Thnks again.

Toolbox Mount

The local truck accessory shop I deal with used two "J" bolts to mount mine. This only works with boxes that sit across the top rails of the bed...not with the ones that sit down in the bed. Anyway, there are NO holes in my truck anywhere...only in the tool box. The J bolts slip under the rail lip and pull the box down tight against foam rubber tape applied to the underside of the two 'ears" of the box.

If you have a Lowes home center near you they sell a mounting kit that basically clamps on the underside of the bed rail....then you bolt the tool box to the mounting bracket......works pretty decent.......
Beware of TSC boxes if you live in the north.....I had two...could'n get them to seal (doors are not adjustable).........every time I was in snow....everything inside got wet. Finally bought one from Lowes with adjustable doors that worked fine.

I put 4 3/8'' bolts in mine. That sucker ain't going anywhere! I also used plenty of clear silicone around the bolts.

If you put holes in the floor, you might get water in your box if it rains real hard. Put your holes through the front wall of your bed. 2 small self tapping screws will do it. You don't need bolts to hold the box down. If someone wants to steal whats in it they can pry the lock in @ 2 seconds.

I bought the TSC box and mounted it this evening. I, too went with 3/8" bolts with big fender washers. I guess I wanted it to survive a class 5 hurricane or something. I only used 3 though, since they were easier to get to that way. Clear silicone around the bolts, too. Pics in my gallery.

Doesn't look like that box will be going anywhere, even in that hurricane!

Mounted mine through back of box NOT THE BOTTOM. Last thing you want is water finding its way in there and it will find its way in there despite what people say. I used all stainless hardware with wing nuts on the inside for removal if need be.

never had a tool box before, and with the 5.5ft bed in the Screw, the cross mount type doesn't leave much room. how about a side mount box that fits along the length of the side rail. i know you don't have as much room in them but at least you get to keep the full lenght of your bed.
