Code 173

I ahve searched the archives for a similar problem and have fond a few, but each of them though similar describe poor power. I have a 95 4.0 w 4WD. All of a sudden the other day i went from 16.6 mpg to 9.5.
I checked the codes and pulled a 171, 172 and 173 in memory. When i ran an engine on test it is giving me a 173. The check engine light is on constantly and sometimes the van bucks, as if flooding, while cruising. If i give it a load or just stomp on the gas it accelerates great, or at least normaly.
I replaced the O2 sensor, but still code 173. From what i have read the fuel pressure regulator seems like the next logical place to look. I admit that the wires are factory (179,000 miles ago) so those are going to be replaced anyway, but from what i have read it doesnt seem like the ultimate solution.
What has me stumped is the lack of other codes and the fact that power is fine with just cruising and mpg being a problem. With a 60 mile roundtrip commute everyday this is getting expensive! But i dont want to just start replaceing parts ***** nilly.
Another thing, how many O2 sensors are there? I'm assuming just the one before the cat.

This is my first post so thank you all in advance

Have you ever had the engine decarbed? If not, that might be causing your bucking problem.

You have 2 O2s, one for each bank.

I would go ahead and clear your codes, drive some, and see if there are any new codes that might lead to something else.

Yeah, i did clear the codes tonight and took a drive. But after 2 miles the light was back on and i check the codes... again 173. this is for the right bank. When i was under the truck i tried to find the second O2 sensor. The only one i could see was right after the pipes converged just before the cat... is this the left or right, and if it's the right where is the left? I Followed the pipe from the "Y" to the exhaust manifold and didnt see another.... I'm stumped on this.
As for the decarbonizing, is that easy, spendy? Also, would this cause the problem to happen gradualy? This problem was like a light switch was hit and the van went from good to bad like NOW.
Thanks again.

Here is a link for the decarbon procedure, it is pretty cheap and easy for you to do :

I could be wrong about the 2 O2s. I don't have an Aerostar, but all my other Fords with EEC-IV and 2 banks always had 2 O2s, each just right after the exhaust pipes converge on the side.

This problem was like a light switch was hit and the van went from good to bad like NOW.
If you were running rich with the bad O2, yes it would act like a light switch.
