So my dad has a 93 van e350 with the 5.8L.. He told me it has been idling rough and using a lot more gas lately. So I plugged a scanner to it and got a cylinder 8 code and code 173.. Code 173 means exhaust rich fuel bank 1.. I have replaced the o2 sensor, all spark plugs and cables, cap and rotor, tps sensor and about to replace the fuel filter. Also my dad replaced the EGR about 2 years ago. Anyone have any other clues.. thank you
I'll agree with checking the fuel pressure regulator, With key on, just pull the vacuum line off the top of the regulator, if you have raw gas coming out the top of the regulator, it's shot, and sucking raw gas into the intake manifold.
Next item - get 6 feet of 5/32" vacuum line, and Replace All the old, dry-rotted rubber line. It's the ones you don't see that are bad once you pull the old (20+ years) lines. A bad vacuum line will cause additional fresh air being sucked into the intake, and cause a high idle, and by-pass the sensors for the ECU to adjust the air/fuel mixture, it will be running rich, using more fuel, and giving you that Code 173.
The scanner your using is correct with the Cylinder 8 "code" that's identifying what engine it is scanning. Nothing to worry about.
If replacing the old vacuum line don't solve the problem, get back here, and we'll toss out some more sensor testing for you to check.
