01 PSD, went for a drive in the mud and now my a/c is stuck on defrost, ive been lifting the hood and listening for the leak, tugging on some hoses, but i just cant find it. Anyone have any tips/hints/tricks on how to find the leak? Id sure like to have my A/c back
Its possible the leak isn't under the hood at all. It could just as easily be behind the dash. Are you sure the pump is running? It (should be) on the right side under the hood. If that's not right for an '01, someone chime in, please....
Yeah Im pretty sure the pump is running, since the a/c comes out just fine and cold, but it only comes out the defrost, not the vents. I took the truck through some mud, thats when it started, which makes me think its probably external, and I cant hear it inside. If it was under the dash, wouldnt I most likely hear it sucking air?
When you went through the mud, did you put it in 4WD? Do you have Electric Shift-On-the-Fly (ESOF)? If you exercise the ESOF, sometimes the auto hub seals leak, reducing the amount of vacuum available to swing the heater box doors to bring the cold air out the panel vents. The default position with no vacuum, is to send the air out the defroster ducts.
I'd make sure that your ESOF hasn't caused the vacuum to go away.
Here's a little trick I came up with a couple of years back that has really helped me to find vacuum leaks.
Pull off one of the vacuum lines that goes into the intake (the best one is the power brake hose, cause it's bigger) and blow smoke from a cigar into the hose.
Smoke will naturally come out of the air intake, but will also show up at the leak.
You'll have to look carefully and maybe even have someone looking with you and with good lighting.
(Warning: Cigar smoke may be hazardous to your health and may be habit forming for your vehicle. No one likes a vehicle that smokes)
