AC in 78 F250

I am interested in adding AC to my 78F250 with a 351m. Can anyone suggest a good model vehicle to rob an ac compressor and bracket?

I would suggest getting these parts out of another 77-79 pickup with a 351M.

If you are adding this to your non A/C truck then you will need more than just a compressor and bracket (probably aware of that), but I would look for a rusted out 73-79 F series and get the complete setup.

The old YORK compressor's are hard to get part's for as well. Might want to look into upgrading to a newer R134 type of compressor.

Yeah, you'll need the complete heater/vent assembly under the dash and the big ol' box under the hood. It'll require cutting a giant hole in your firewall too. They are plentiful around my area, just from what I've seen in the Pull & Save yards. I don't imagine it will cost too much but it will require a lot of work.

I am planning the same thing. Just picked up a compressor and condensor coils with the dryer attached from a fellow FTE member here in Austin. Just need to get the ducts, controls, and vents for the interior (probably a new dash bezel as well). I will also need to find the big fan box for the firewall and some new coolant lines.

Anyone that has actually done this successfully have any advice or warnings? Problems to avoid? Thanks!

Jeeze , from the sounds of it , I'm glad mine has factory air. The 'Boss' won't drive it until I get it fixed tho ~smile~ but she does want it fixed and that means upgraded from orignal compressor etc. Let us know if you go for new under hood parts and what the costs ae , eh?
Thanks

I'm curious too, what would be a good replacement? I expect to have to alter my brackets, or make new ones. Can I just get any compressor for a newer pickup/car with v8 and make it work or are there pressure issues (I'm not a a/c tech...).

Any ideas? Has anyone used a newer style compressor on our 73-79's?

For my 460, I used a lincoln setup which had the newer style compressor. I had to modify a little how the PS & AC bracketry mounted on the motor to clear the PS gear. But I run the AC compressor off of the PS pump.

Did you use it out of convenience, or is there a performance difference over a York? What did you do for hoses? custom made? Do you have a pic of it? How old of a Lincoln?

I appreciate the help.

I got it out of an early 70's lincoln. I had the hoses mades to fit, as they didn't work with the dealer installed AC. The only pictures I have is without the compressor installed. But if you look at my Gallery, you can kind of see the PS mount and the two holes where the compressor mounts.

I only used it out of convenience. This setup uses the saginaw type pump instead. You may notice that the pump is tipped a bit, that is how much I had to bring the mount up to miss the steering gear.

Ryan.
