I had wanted the plastic molded cab steps but my truck came with the chrome tubular steps. I like the way the plastic steps are raised up higher and tucked in better. They can also function as a long mud flap for the lower body. The chrome step looks good but I don't like the way they hang down so low. It looks tacky to me. Some steps are needed to help you up in the tall truck though.
I have the chrome steps myself, and I wanted the regular steps too. I personally don't think it matters all that much, the truck is so high to begin with I don't think I will have a problem driving over anything.
Well here's my $ .02, I 've had both and prefer the chrome tubular step bars. I think they look great and the molded look a little cheap. But it's all just a preference thing. Everyone is different.
Another vote for the molded running boards. They give you more area to stand on, less chance of slipping, won't chip or rust, and help protect the truck from road debris.
Once I took my truck to have it hand washed. The guys were putting armor all on the tires and decided it would be a good idea to put it on my running boards. You can imagine the rest.
One more for the plastic - they really help keep the junk off the side of the truck. The chrome look great, but having that long mud flap and more area to step on are definite advantages.
Stuff like this is always a personal preference deal.
I went with wheel to wheel tubes on last three trucks. Looks good and I can easily get into my tool box. Chrome, black, pink, yellow polka dots, or whatever it takes to make your truck look good.
I vote for the plastic I think that you are less likely to slip and they stop mud and road debris. I seen a 04 yesterday with tubs ,the guy just came out of a farm field, the mud was piled up on the step almost the height of the door.
Has anyone seen a after market step that matches the factory for the box. Reaching my 5ver hitch release is a pain with BRW
The chrome is the way to go. The plastic is great for keeping the mud off of a stock SD but who in here has a stock truck. The tubes look better and make the truck look like it wasn't modded out at Schuck's or Autozone.
I have the chrome tubes from the factory and I too did not like the how low they were. So, I pulled the brackets and re-drilled the holes about an inch and quater lower which raised them the same once re-mounted. (1.25" is about as high as you can go with out cutting the top of the bracket off). It looks 100% better and gives better ground clearance for offroading. BTW I would have no steps before I had plastic...just my opinion.
