My truck is all stock ! And I have the molded steps ! Easy to get in,,protec's the bottom of cab and door much better, I also have Ford molded flaps behind front wheels, nothing gets on the fender or door bottom other then dust and rain,, and it's what I wanted.
I've had my GoRhino wheel to wheel nerfbars for over 2 years and l-o-v-e them. Step to the bed, rear seat and front. It just get no better than this, plus shiney chrome to boot!!
I have the Chrome tubular steps on my CC 4x4 and didn't quite like lowered look that they gave my truck as well as the clearance loses. So I modified them by shortening each bracket by 1 hole pitch and adding another mtg hole ... trimmed the plastic covers to fit the mtg position. Now they look great, gives the truck the clearence, protects the lower area of the truck better from mud, etc.

My 02 F250 SCab is basically stock except for 285 tires. That is how I intend to keep it along with the molded plastic running boards which are more practical in the rain and snow than slick metal tubes. Ouch!
I have an 03 6.0 CC with the chrome bars. I can tell you that if you play in the mud...the steps are the way to go. I was out hunting (not mudding just hunting) and I had inches of mud caked INSIDE the doors. My uncle has almost the same truck with the steps and had almost no mud in his truck. So if functionality is what you want get the steps...If your in it for looks it is your chioce. Just my opinion and observations.
Like the look of the tubes but think the molded steps on my 01 were more functional (especialy for older folks). Kind of whish it was an option for my 04.
? I have seen molded plastic steps on most of the 04's around here. mine had nothing and i put the large hoop steps, aluminum with knurls to step on. Works for steping up, cheap, and i like the look. For keeping mud off ... aint that what mud flaps are for?
Well, I've got the chrome cab steps and I like the looks of them just fine....so much so that my dealer keeps giving me new ones everytime I go in for service....seems the service department can't help but crush the undersides of them whenever my truck goes on a lift! I've had my truck there three times (minor reasons) since new...and I'm already on my third replacement set! Will not be returning there for any more "service" .....nice guys, but how much confidence can I have in the quality of their workmanship when they can't even hoist my truck in the air to work on it? Thanx for letting me vent! That felt good!
The only think I don't like about my plastic units is they catch water. If you park on a grade, chances are one of them will trap some, and in winter it could get interesting.
The chrome/aluminum/stainless/painted tubes look great from a distance. If you have snow/mud etc they are a piece of you know what, everything just sits on top of them (worse than molded) and when you get out they are either slippery or you get crap all over your legs if you aren't careful. The other thing with the tube look is the access points for most of the doors isn't suited for normal entry and how many times have people stepped on the tube and scatched the paint (like on my expedition) or slip on the tube. I unfortunately have them on 2 vehicles now and one previous one, the SD/SC is okay because of the long uninterupted rubber step but still get the unwanted on top. Molded are number one for function and they aren't that noticeable, but if someone wants to add looks, I would have to agree to go tubes. And what is the deal with Ford when a changed model comes out it takes them 2 years to color coordinate the molded boards?
