What the

This is bound to be a very negative post, so if it bugs you, don't read it.
I consider myself to be a calm guy, and I know myself to be very slow to anger, but I'm very angry now. There is an 18 year old kid that was a sophomore at Inglemoor H.S. when I was a senior. I knew him when he was a rookie wide reciever when I was a senior defensive end. He is very good at track and football, and is considered one of the top violinists in the state. He was offered several scholarships because of these skills. To top it off he is a very nice guy and all around gentlemen, one of the few you'll run into at a public high school. Last february he broke his foot snowboarding, and as such has been on crutches since then. This last weekend as he and his best friend walked through Kirkland, a group of boys started yelling at them calling the kid on the crutches a cripple. When he yelled back to knock it off and leave him alone, four boys got out and savagely beat the two friends and broke the crutches over the handicapped boy's head. The best friend got away with only minor injuries, but such was not the case for my former teammate. This kid, who had a good future playing football on a scholarship to an oregon school, now is in the hospital with a fractured skull and brain damage. His right side is partially paralized. The doctors are optimistic about an eventual full recovery, but it will be many months, if not years down the line. Now, one of the most promising kids to come out of my high school is barely able to talk, and his scholarship is in jeopardy. It'll be difficult to maintain the strength for football, and the fine motor skills for playing the violin may never be fully recovered.
The police arrested the four assailants this morning, and now, while I'm glad that these boys will be brought to justice, I grow concerned about where it'll go from here. The names of the attackers are already spreading around the school, and my sister, who is still of high school age, passes rumors on to me that there will be a gang beating of the attackers far worse than the original attack, possibly resulting in fatal wounds and irrepairable maiming. Word is that this attack originally happened because of the two groups coming from rival schools. I wonder if this will set a precedent for even more rival school violence.
I realize now, that even though I pick my friends well, and tolerate nothing dishonorable, it is little protection. At the young age of 20, I already know three people gang beaten that did little to provoke it, and I know of several others that have only by the grace of God been able to talk their way out of it.
So, while I know it is an unanswerable question, I still ask, "What is going on? What kind of a world do we live in where this is common place?"
I for one am disgusted by it, because I can only see it getting worse.

You're a very good writer Bud.

Your letter flowed very well and was easily understood.

My feeling is there seems to be the lack of :
"Respect for Life"

The Liberals in the way they have pandered to cetain areas of society in general has IMHO caused this total disgrace of each other to a point.
Remember the news reports " Bad Things more than the good things in life"

What the

I am very, very sorry to hear about your team mate. I wish him the best and hope he recovers. I understand why your mad and confused it ticked me off when I read it to. Its so sad to see someone like your friend have his life ruined by a bunch of thugs. And no matter what they do to those boys legal wise, they will still be able to do whatever they want, they don't have to live their lives each day in pain and frustration. And to add salt to the wounds they probably had every chance in the world to excell in their own ways and chose not to. I feel so scared for the kids today, and its not just in the big public schools anymore, its worked its way into small towns like mine. I don't have any kids myself but I have a 12 year old nephew that I have helped raise, and he is my son. One day he came home from school crying, I asked him what was wrong, he said the kids were teasing him because he had small feet. SMALL FEET for God's sake! Where are the parents and role models in these kids lives? Who is teaching them right from wrong? Why can't anything be done to stop this crap before one more child get's hurt? God I wish I had the answers to all these questions, but I don't. And I don't think anyone will until the parents wake up and hear the toilet flushing their kids down the drain!!! I offer you the deepest sympathy of myself and my family, and I hope your friend recovers. Mean time if there is anything I or the other members can do for you just let us know. Also could you keep us up to date on your friends condition, I sure would appreciate it. Good luck, and God Bless.

What the

I truly hope that this young man has a full and healthy recovery. I graduated high school last year and am glad to be out because I can see it getting worse and worse. I live in a fairly small town of 30,000 and although it isn't that bad here yet times will change unless something is done. What happened to thge days where two people could fight one on one no weapons even playing field and when it was over IT WAS OVER. My wishes are with your friend and I hope everything will go well. Good Luck. Canadianfordman.

You are so right! I hate to even think where our world will end up if this trend continues.

I'll keep this man in my prayers for a speedy and complete recovery.

What the

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Our society as a whole has cheapenend human life to a point where nothing is surprising and nothing is sacred. We kill our unborn under the guise of "personal privacy" and "convenience". We kill our elderly and infirmed under the guise of "humanity" and "dignity". We have a whole generation of children brought up on "Spare the rod" and "time-out discipline, children who have no parents to respect, let alone have any respect for themselves or others. We have whole segments of our population who seek familial relationships in groups that require one to commit murder to belong. We celebrate ANY behavior or action under the label tolerance or free speach. We pay people with college degrees $30,000 a year to babysit juvenile delinquints and call them teachers.
It's not movies. It's not music. Those things are merely the byproduct of it. It's the fact that we have bred a whole generation or two of children we haven't bothered to actually raise. We've abdicated our parental responsibility to the "village" and our "great society".
We have a society that is run now by the "If it feels good, do it" generation. Some years ago, I saw an excellent quote which I wish I had written down because it explains EXACTLY what is taking place now. It went something like:
"This country is being run by the generation that grew up questioning authority and now don't understand why they don't have any...."

It's a sad state of affairs.

What the

sorry to hear about ur bud man but being 17 my self i have noticed that most kids like that are truly cowards. take them down to them selfs no friends and there nothing, there rejects who decided to try and gain some negative attention and need each other to do it. i delt with kids like that when i was younger and almost wound up in a fight with one of em but the kid was by himself and did'nt have any of his other rejects to back him up. you had to see it cause im 5'1" and he was 5'9" or so at the time. after that he relized that hes nothin with out his friends and he didnt say a word to me after that.

try confroting them when there alone, just to talk to em, watch what happens they'll 10 to 1 shy away.

good luck man.

What the

This lack of respect for others is a continuing and increasing problem. The liberals running the school and the 'family services' are creating more problems than they are solving. To XP8103: that quote you had is attributed to ARISTOTLE, so the problem is not new. Free men can bear arms and an armed society is a polite society. Show me a place where gun laws are restrictive and you will see a high crime rate. We have concealed carry in Texas and 30 other states and in every case the crime rate went down after these laws were enacted. I truly hope your friend recovers.

I haven't heard much new on my teammate, but I hear he is getting a little better. The swelling in his brain is going down, and as it does, the paralysis is getting less and less. He still has a long road ahead of him, but it's good to know that his journey down the path of healing has already begun.
