why should you live it . i guess you have a lot of money to waste cause i paid a lot of money for my truck and you should not have and trouble for at least 80,000 miles ! these trucks are a real piece of junk
I visited this site several months ago, while living through the nightmare of this shudder while accelerating. I could get it to shudder at least four times if I really nailed it on take-off. It went back to the shop 5 times for the same problem. They tried the teflon grease and modifier. Then they changed the clutch pack (twice) Then they gutted the rear, and replaced axles. But the fix came when they replaced the entire drive shaft/yolk assembly. They placed the original yolk in a vise and demonstrated how it was binding. Greasing it up losens it for a few days (and gets you out of the shop) But the frickin thing needs to be removed. There is obviously a problem with its design as they are coming right off the showroom floor with this problem. When I walked in with copies of threads from FTE I was told the TSB requires the dealer to try the BS that doesn't fix the problem before replacing the driveshaft and yolk as an entire assembly, or Ford won't pay for it. Sounds like a bunch of crap to me. I was well beyond the requirements of the NJ Lemon Law on my 4th visit, but the guy that sold me the truck is a very close friend. When I dropped it off the 5th time, I told the service manager it would be my last visit. I don't know or care if that statement had any impact. The truck is now fine, and without a doubt the best vehicle I have ever driven in my life.
Don't hesitate to take the truck back until it's fixed. There is no reason for you to live with it. It can be fixed. I'm sure it eats gas binding like that. And there's no doubt it's hard on the drivetrain.
Make your dealer call my dealer's service manager and ask how to solve the riddle. "Chapman Ford 856-391-3000" Ask for Adam Zalit. He has fixed my F-150, so he knows how to do it!
I have had my 05 screw fx now for 2 weeks. I have heard this clunk describe here maybe 2 or 3 times since I have had the truck and put 450 miles on it. Is this going to be an on going problem which will only get worse or will it stay the same and doesn't really pose a threat to the truck?
I hate to bring it in already and start with all the BS trying to have the dealership fix it. Like everyone said hard to duplicate it and I've only heard it a couple of times. And if I do take it in ,how to explain and what to tell them the problem is.
Thanks for all the info psy61 I think I'm going to wait for now. It actually seems to be less noticable(for some reason) after I installed the tuner. I still wonder though if it is really doing physical harm to anything. I had a '90 F 150 and since new it clunked like hell into and out of OD. Still have the truck(sittin for now) with about 170,000mi. Orig. motor, trans, transfercase, rear....everything. I had in into the dealer for the clunk in the begining at least a half dozen times(the '90) I hate to bring it in if:
1. dosen't harm anything and 2. if they aren't going to do anything( at least without seriously fighting them)
Also; most people have a fear of the dentist. I have a serious fear of the dealer!
Thanks again for the info.
my truck 2 months old... 2,500 miles on it.....it was built on 4/9/05.....
i have noticed this clunk 3 times now......when coming from a stop, into a turn and accelerating slowly... feels and sounds like hitting a pot hole....
i found 2 TSB's about this:
TSB 04-24-20
Limited Slip Axel Chatter, Shudder, Binding Sensation, or Vibration During Low Speed Turning Maneuvers....
Fix From TSB: - Replace Limited Sliup Clutch Pack
TSB 04-26-6
Clunk Or Bump When Starting From A Stop
Fix From TSB: - Lubricate the slip yoke with 7-13 grams (0.25-0.46 o.z.) of Motorcraft PTFE Lubricant.
Truck is going in on Tuesday for rear knocking noise that they failed to fix the first time it was in... I'll mention the "clunk" to them then but I doubt they will be able to repro it as it's only happened 3 times to me.... oh well....
Since I originally started this post, they greased the yoke, replaced clutch pack, and replaced the entire drive shaft. It wasn't fixed until they replaced the drive shaft. Now, a few weeks later, it did it again a few times, but after that, knock on wood, I have not heard it since.
I have a 96' XLT and I have had the car in the shop now for 4 weeks ! A few months ago, I need to replace the T Case. Since then, I hear a repeating clunk noise when I accelerate. The shop told me to replace the rear axle which I have done, but the problem is still there. The clunk seems to be aggrevated when I go over bumps too !
Any ideas ? I have suggested U joints, slip yoke and end-play...??
is this going to be considered regular maintenace??
1st time in for the clunk they told me it was the shackles in the rear locking up. 2nd time I brought the tsb and they said "ohhhh". greased the spline and it went away only to come back but more pronounced while turning and accelerating at the same time. now every time I come in mentioning tsb's they give me a hard time saying that I see a tsb and then find a problem... I have to remind them that they seemingly didn't know what a tsb was when I first came in. now if the clunk keeps coming back are we to take it that this is regular maintenance???
Just Got My Truck Back From Dealer For Same Problem. They Said Something About Leaf Sring Bushings, Replaced Them Still Was There, Then Greased The Slip Yoke On Output Shaft On Transfercase, Problem Solved!!! Don't Know If This Helps Anyone. Good Luck.
