I have a 2001 F250 4X4 7.3 Power Stroke with 31,000 miles. This is my first diesel and not sure if this is normal. I have the Banks Power Pack installed with the Power Elbow eliminating the EBV & the Ford AIS (Everything else is stock). The truck runs awesome and I get about 27lbs of boost. The problem is at idle. The idle fluctuates 75 to 150 rpms at idle only. It does this cold or after operating temp is reached. I had the dealer run a Diag. test and everything was fine. Are these engine supposed to idle this way or is there something I should be concerned with. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
they idle very smoothly, I would check you oil level and make sure it is right on. Also check the air filter and fuel filter, especially if they have not been serviced for awhile.
The oil level is right on. The oil and fuel filter was changed about 2,000 miles ago. I'm using Royal Purple 15W40. This is the 2nd oil change that I've given it since I bought the truck. The air filter only has 1,000 miles on it and before I put the AIS intake on, I kept a clean filter and never had any dust showing in the intake tube. This is whats so frustrating. Truck runs great, serviced like it should be and this idle problem is showing up.
try installing the ebv, I know stock they run about 14.5 to 15lb back pressure at idle. This may have and effect on the idle. Also check all of the little vacuum hose on the motor , a cracked of disconnect one will make thing go wacky.
Got a similar problem on an 01 with 61k (see erratic idle post). It usually idles at 750, but I noticed it bouncing around this past weekend. Havent been the dealer yet. If you find the problem, please give a holler. I will do the same.
Clean the fuel regulator screen and see if that helps. It can be cleaned by using Q-tips GENTLY. The screen should be at the upper right of the fuel bowl (as you are facing the engine) with the lid removed. If that doesn't work, check the fuel pressure and the pressure from the high pressure oil pump. There is a schrader valve on the FPR to check fuel pressure. I'm not sure how to check the pressure of the HPOP, but low pressure would cause injection problems.
