new to forum can any body let me know if the have ever had there power stroke have a little rough idle and surge up and down when your just letting it idle in gear or in park it goes up and down about 200rpm it's a 1997 f-250 4x4 automatic when driving i don't notice anything just at and idle did any body have this problem and what does it need to fix it besides this is my first power stroke i owned please send me any info if anyone has any.
You must be getting close to needing an oil change my 97 tells me when it wants an oil change. The tack goes up 150 to 200 RPM then back down when im siting at a light. So change the oil and it will run Better
it only surges after it seems to be getting warm when it's cold it don't to be as noticeable when you driving don't have any missing or anything like that like i said it seems when it idles up and down it reminds you when you turn on the a/c and puts a load and slows it down?
Hey i had the exact same problem on my 97 x-cab... First you should get a new fuel filter/water seperator (drain the bowl first via manual direstions) but before you re-install the filter, there is a little hole on the driverside of the truck, about 3/4 inch down, near the end of the threads.... get about 20 Q-tips and CAREFULLY clean out that hole... there is a small screan on the inside there and just use circular motions.. use as many q-tips as nessicary untill they come out clean.... mine was so bas that it took 30 Q-tips, and the idle was so rought that it would also ocationnaly stall at the same time you are having a rough idle... hope it helps good luck with your truck!!
P.S..... after you clean it out.... it might smoke a little... this is normal just the eng burning off the excess air from the pockets in the fuel filter..... you may want to take it up and down the main drag a few times... and get ur RPM's up a little to blast any remnants through your system also..... hope this helps!!
replaced fuel filter seems a little better talked to another power stroke owner he said his idles up and down when it's up to operating temp he had it from new and claims it always did this from new?
My 02 PSD doesn't idle worth a dang when I run Bio Fuel. Does the 02 have the hole/screen that needs cleaning or is it just that it doesn't like the "tree hugger" juice?
Mine has done this since brand new, but not all the time. Just periodically. I've always wondered what it is. Runs fine otherwise. A buddy of mine bought an '04 earlier this year (brand new 6.0 PSD) and his does the same thing. ?????????

No screen. Completly different system with and electrical, not mechanical fuel pump.

That's odd. I just put a tank of straight biodiesel (commercially processed) through my '99, and the truck really liked it. Ran great, sounded good, and smelled, errr.... amusing....
My 95 used to do the surging thing every now and then but here lately it seems to do it pretty much all the time. In the past I would put some Deisel Clean in and rUn it pretty hard for a while and it would clear up. That's not helping now...
