Ive got a 66 F100 SWB 2WD with a 352FE and 4 speed transmission. My question is what aftermarket 6 speed trannys are available for my application? Ive seen a Richmond 6 speed for 3 grand and it was nice but I dont think its rated for trucks. Are there any other brands out there? I would prefer a 6 speed but could settle for a 5 if I had to. I do occasional heavy towing in mountains with it and thats why I need all the gears my 4 speed in it right now is on the verge of giving out. Any help would be greatly apperciated.
There are the new NV5600s advertised, but they are more of hauler tranny. I would imagine you can get anything in there you want if you have the $$.Ted
The problem is the FE engine. If you can find an adaptor for it, there is the ZF 5speed that came on both 460's and 351's in the 80's/90's. The NV4500 (5speed) is a popular tranny and does have a seperate bellhousing, unlike the ZF's, so it may be easier to adapt. The NV came in Dodge and GM trucks in the '90's. Advanced Adaptors or Novak may have something to enable using the NV4500.
To make it easier, you may consider swapping both the engine and tranny to a 460/ZF-5speed combo, since they already go together and the 460 is about the most powerful Ford gas V8 to be used in pickup trucks, plus it has plenty of aftermarket support if you want to hop it up a little.
John352, please don't even think about swapping in something other than your FE. They are the best. The tranny you need is the Clark 280 series. It is a 5 speed from the medium duty trucks, frequently came behind the 391 and 361 FT engines. Mine came out of an F700. I got the trans, bell, clutch and flywheel, everything for 250$. My Clark 285V has the following gears- 1st 6.99, 2nd 4.09, 3rd 2.24, 4th 1.47, and 5th is 1 to 1. If you then hang a GV gear splitter off from the back of that, 10 forward gears, whats not to like ? And still cheaper than a Richmond. DF, @ his Dad's house
Jon, There may be some options out there, but all are rather pricey. There are a ton of your type old trannys available and if you look you could pickup one for $25.00 or so. Sorry but there are no easy/cheap fixes for the FE. I'd love to have an auto overdrive behind mine.
All non overdrive trannys have a 1 to 1 ratio in high gear. If a little more pull is what you need a rear swap is cheap and easy.
