The last few weeks i have been watching this forum to learn more about my first diesel and I have noticed alot of the users are useing the rotella motor oil. I was just wandering why I dont see to many users useing the the ford motorcraft oil? Is it a better oil or is it just what people like. This is my first power stroke diesel and just want the best oil for it. Thanks for any help u can give me.
I personally think the Rotella is a better oil. It isn't consummed as easily as others. After about 5000, my truck will burn off about a quart of oil. Some people have come into the forums using other brands of oil and have been burning off about 3 times as much.
Yea I use Rotella for my truck and my Dad's truck - mostly because it is what is available around here - and now, because that's what my Dad got a 55Gal. drum of!!! Can you say free oil?? Nice! I don't think there's anything wrong at all with Motorcraft oil - but I would imagine its more expensive than other oils that are of the same quality. Bet you pay for that "Ford" logo on every bottle!
Thanks for the replys. I was just thinking on which one tho get because at the local wal-mart its $1.45 a quart for the motorcraft compared to $1.70 for the rotella. but if the rotella is a better oil i might go with that. thanks
The Motorcraft oil is cheaper?? Huh - that's a new one. Maybe because it's at Wal-Mart. Basically - any diesel oil that has the correct rating should be about the same - unless you are talking about something special like a synthetic - they should all do the job just fine for ya!
I was going to say that I use Rotella because a lot of people recommended it to me, and because it is readily avaliable at Wal-Mart. I have never seen Motorcraft 15w-40 at my Wal-Mart.........
Not all of the Walmarts in this area (Kansas) stock 15w-40 Motorcraft. I've seen it in some in my area, but the local one doesn't stock it. So, when I'm out and about if I find it in stock in another town I buy it so I've got enough on hand for the next oil change. The price here is also $1.45/qt.
I supervise in a maintenance shop for a large trucking company and have been around trucks for 30+ years, about half in maintenance supervision.
That said, the three most common oils in use in diesels are Shell Rotella, Mobil Delvac 1300 and Chevron Delo 400. All three are fine petroleum based oils. I have tried Shell and Chevron in mine and find slightly longer intervals to the truck running a little worse on the Chevron, but this could be due to a change in oil filter brand as well. You really can't go wrong with any of them. There are many other brands of diesel rated oil that would work - these are the ones I see most often.
BTW, my employer uses Mobil Delvac 1300 in their fleet of 1100 or so tractors.
I use Chevron Delo in mine, and am very happy with it. The best price I've found for it is a six pack of gallons at Costco for $35, which comes out to $1.45/qt.
Does a guy have to add antifoam to the Rotella or MotoCraft oils for a 7.3 PSD?
I have never used the Motorcraft oil. Rotella seems to do fine on its own, or did with me when I used it (only a few thousand miles). Delo 400 has done fine for around 75,000 miles in my truck with currently 212,000 or so on the clock. Mobil Delvac 1300 does fine in our fleet of over-the-road tractors.
the anti-foam agent is built into some disel oils and obviously resitst foaming. It is especially important for the PSD because the PSD uses oil pressure to run the injectors so it uses a very high pressure oil pump to do this. The combintaiion of the high presssure oil pump and the injectors being run on oil, causes the oil to foam which is of course not very good for your engine.
