Radiator Overflow Tank

Does the heigth the overflow tank is mounted at, make any difference?
I have a 2" X 15" tube that I want to mount beside the radiator. The top of the overflow tank will be about 8" below the top of the radiator. Is there any reason this would be a problem?

I think higher is better, but I think it may work. You could temp install it and try. Where are you installing it to get it that low? 15" + 8" + hoses probably coming out the bottom?

I have the same size on my 56. I mounted it to the radiator supports. Still had plenty of room to run the hoses and overflow hose. Worked out nice. I made my own brackets out of stainless steel. L shaped and used the ones that came with it. The top of my tank is flush with the top of the radiator. Not below 8", why would you do that?

email me if he doesn't get a chance. I can get a digital of mine. It sounds like we are set up the same. I have a feeling Dong has something already mounted to the back of his air deflectors and it is in the way.

I've got my overflow tank mounted to the side and below the top of my radiator. It works fine. The only reason it would need to be at the same level as the top would be if you had a non-pressure cap on the rad and the pressure cap on the tank. That's the way new vehicles are plumbed. My TorHiss (Taurus) has the pressure cap on the plastic tank with no access to the rad fill unless you dismantle most of the front end as far as I can see. The plastic tank is right up there with the height of the rad.

So, following the directions that came with my tank, use a new rad cap of the correct pressure rating, plumb the overflow to the tank you have and run the tank overflow out below the frame a bit. You're in business!

The reason I mounted mine this way, was for convenience. I'm able to look inside the tank, I can access it easily from atop, and bottom and it looks good. I've seen some that are hidden to the side, I don't think it's as practical. Who knows, I may change mine if I get bored. It's not difficult to do. It would be nice to see variations of different installs.

overflow tank

I want to mount the top of the tank even with the top of the radiator mounts. That will look a lot better than sticking it up. Hose does come out of the bottom and will run up to tube on side of fill neck. The overflow tank is vented. I understand that if your radiator cap has the small spring loaded valve in the center of the cap, that it will work. If the cap does not have this, it will let water out if the pressure goes to high, but will not be able to suck water back in from a overflow tank.
Sounds OK to me, hope it is correct info.

very cool setup! I have a modern radiator, but no overflow tank at all... Where did that tall thin unit come from?

Here is one for about $30 shipped. I was concerned about quality for low price, but they are very nice. I've had mine for several years. They used to cost double that. I intend to paint mine someday. It's a little flashy for my engine compartment.

Or do an ebay search for "polished aluminum overflow" and you'll have many sizes to choose from.

And by the way that is a very sharp 56 imlowr2.

Thanks for the kind words fatfender. I've seen the tanks your talking about in ebay. They look nice. I purchased mine at a automotive swap meet here in CA. It was $25. They have two types. One is aluminum and the other stainless steel. I have stainless steel. I think they last longer and once they are buffed are easy to take care of. Another thing you want to look at is the cap. Some have the "O" ring and some have a clear vinyl ring. I think they both work, however I went with the "O" ring because they are easier to replace when they get old. But, as cheap as they are who cares? Like fatfender stated, you can go to ebay, search aluminum or stainless steel overflow. Good luck!
