i can fax u a schematic to fix the problem.the lights have to long of wiring and smoke your connections on your switch at the dash board.to fix it right costs 10 bucks of parts and an hour of time .you put a bosch electric switch by the battery and it cures the problem for good.i ve had problems with the lights on every ford from at least 67-79.if you break open the switch you will see the contacts are all arced over because it draws to much .by having your headlight switch operate a electric switch closer to the power sorce it also makes your headlights brighter which has always been a problem on these trucks ,even if you put in halogens there still weak
Replacing the switch is an easy do. There is a tang on bottom of switch that you push to get **** out of switch assy. Then unloosen the nut on front of dash and pull switch out the back. Unplug the wiring harness.
Reverse procedure to install new switch. Once switch is mounted, just push the **** back into the switch and it will lock in position.
Freightrain, I know that all the 69-1970 I've worked on it was there. On my 71 4x4 it was moved from there. I had the same troubles with mind. Found the plug from wire loom to where it plugs in to the the fender plug needed to be cleaned. So try this first before you do the mony out of pocket trick.
my 2cents............

When it comes to switches, I've found that most all of them are available at local parts stores. When you (or someone) has been using a switch for 30+ yrs, it is due for failure. When i got my truck 16 yrs ago, I replaced all of them, and havent had one go bad yet. Best of all, they are quite cheap. Also swapped head lights to halogens, and never had a prob.
The Ford headlight switchs have points inside that act as a circuit breaker. Mine had the same problem. I took the switch apart and bent the arm on the points to compensate for the spring getting weaker. It took care of the problem. Even with a new switch, you can have the flashing problem when hooked to trailer lights.
