in my opinion, sony makes awful car audio. the high numbers on the ouside of their stuff is all peak and i really doubt if they put out that much power.
i dont think ive ever seen a thread with this much conflict in it, kinda funny ive gotta admit, but i agree with 90% enclosure, because you can deaden a sub if the box isnt built right, im one of those guys that has the "i have a friend"ory but he has 4 12" L7 solobarics each hooked up to pheonix gold amps, i think tantrums, not quite sure but he's hit 156dB and ive rode with him and he barely turned it up and the bass was hitting so hard i was kinda scared my heart was going to offbeat or something, but i know that JL isnt that awesome, personally i think they're overrated, but hey im a newbie, anyways.. have fun
Renegade, I'm not trying to start a fight or anything at all here...but I think your formula might be off a little. According to that formula (I have checked it three times) this cheap-*** Profile California series amp that is only rated for 400W would actually be pushing 500W in my Ranger, and I know that Profile is known for over-rating their products. Is there a "divide by 2" you forgot to add on when you typed out the formula?

I have heard of Lightning Audio, they have three quality lines Storm (best), Strike (Med), and Bolt (Low).
I am currently doing a full system installation in my 99 Explorer Sport and am using L.A. Storm wiring components. I don't know anything about L.A. speakers or other components.
I'm using 3 SoundStream "Rubicon" amps, a SoundStream capacitor,
4 Infinity "Perfect" component 5 1/4"s and a "Perfect" 10.1 DVC sub with a
Nakamichi MB-100 6 disc in-dash tuner/changer. For me this is a little overboard but I've always wanted to do an install on an SUV. My goal is "as close to perfect sound as possible" on a budget. I purchased every component on eBay for half price or less.
You can invest in quality once, or pay for junk over and over.

At least you all understand the concept of "good for the price." I personally just installed Sony's Xplod 6.5" speakers in the doors of my truck. Now the only distortion is when the stereo tries going too hard, cause I'm still running the stock head unit for another couple of weeks.
Reason I got the Sony's instead of my preferred Pioneer's was because I got the Sony's off of Ebay for 5 dollars. My beater doesn't deserve great, or else I'd have Infinity all around! Next is the clearance/blowout-special head unit I happen to find on millionbuy.com for 40-70 dollars (at least half off, if not more though) and a set of tweeters to tie into the front channel's so I have more then two sources of sound. Right now the deck I'm looking at is a Pyramid that is on sale/closeout on that site. I'll do the same and find some manufacturer's tweeters on sale - I don't feel like dealing with mounting boxes in my truck or anything for 6x9's.
If the price is good, why not? Daily driving needs more then crackly radio, or crackly speakers.
I'd be very wary of buying anything from Pyramid. You can't trust them. Specific example: the amp wiring kit that claimed to have something like an 8 or 10 gauge power cable. The wire they provided was more like #16.
PYLE makes a good looking double din deck that would look great in my truck but I dont know anybody who uses PYLE products. They are offering a 2 year warrenty.
I saw a PYLE ampifier at a very good price and good amount of wattage. I asked around and people kept saying that PYLE is PYLE of crap....so i never bought it
i think if you're just getting started, pyle would be great, if you have hardly any money, and are not looking for the best quality yet.. but i also think you would be happier with what you have it were higher quality and had more power, if you dont have too much money and are looking for something until you upgrade pyle should be alright, not necessarily good or excellent but alright.. also dont take their word on the amount of wattage they put out, its usually unrealistic as in when it says 600 watts, thats usually max and the RMS on that is going to be pretty low, the rule you can really go on is per RMS watt it's about $1, anyways im tired and it's early so i think im going to go to walmart
