Dash paint peeling 97 Expy

In the past 6 months I have been getting dash paint peeling, small patches, dime size or so. Mostly on the driver side on the edges and around the stereo trim. I went to Ford for the paint and went over to the body shop to ask why its doing this. They of course shrugged their shoulders. Though they did say to prime it first before painting it. Well, I got it painted and thought my problem solved, then...baddabing...now its doing it on another spot and a couple of the smaller ones from earlier have returned. Any suggestions ????

I feel your pain. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=243859

I would question what you used to clean your dash. Anything with a solvent may attack the paint.

Are you using DuPont interior paint? I was not told I had to prime, only wash the surface with soap and water and apply the paint.

The only thing I've put on this dash had been Armorall. I tried cleaning the armorall off the "infected" area with rubbing alcohol, since its not an oil base product and evaporates quickly and did a descent job or so I thought. The paint is Ford specified dash paint ($21 for a can, arrgghh). I will give the ol' soap and water a try. Thanks

As far as I know, all dashes Ford uses today are painted. I guess it is cheaper for one thing to make them all black and painted to the color you need on demand. I know many interior components are made to order. If you need a leather seat cover for example, they will make one for your vehicle and ship it to the dealer. Ive seen this in several repairs Ive done recently. The item was marked with the assembly date and was always within a few days of the item shipped. You can imagine trying to stock sufficient supplies of a complete dash panel assembly in every color would be very costly, especially if one or more colors were never sold and moved. So keeping a limited number of basic black and painting to the color needed would be a lot more cost effective.
I can also imagine that it is easier to get a flat finish with paint than injection moulded to color. Flat finish is the desired effect for safety. Usage of Armor All and other similar conditioners is not recommended due to the glare effect on the dash when applied.

I have seen Armor All eat plastic finishes right off, especially on Explorers with the shiny black trim around the radio/climate controls and on the switch plates on the doors. I have also seen a number of Multifunction switches that failed due to people spraying it into the switch while treating the columb shroud. It will eat away the contacts in the 4 way flasher switch.
