Dash paint peeling?

About 6 months ago I noticed a spot on the dash of my '01 F150 (near the cupholder) where the tan paint had flaked off. Since then, more spots like this have been appearing in the same area.
Has anyone else had this problem (tried searching the forum, but didn't come up with much.) Is there anyway to stop the dash from peeling further?

Thanks,
Mark

There is no way I know of to halt the peeling except to repaint. The solution we use on used trucks is to mask off the parts (remove the easy ones instead) and spray them with matching interior paint. You can apply it with a swab to small areas rather than spray.

I gently sand the removed parts to get some of the origjnal paint off.

It's actually quite common because Ford used a lot of black plastic and painted it instead of molding all the parts in different colors.

I'd get a roll of painters tape (regular masking tape leaves sticky residue), mask off everything around the problem spot, and have at it.

Interior paint/dye is NASTY so do this outdoors with the windows down for plenty of ventilation!

A useful tip is that you can use dash parts from other color interiors by repainting them. IF IT DOESN'T COME OFF EASILY, LOOK FOR THE BOLT/SCREW YOU MISSED. THEY ARE MANY AND CUNNINGLY HIDDEN!

You will require a 1/4" drive metric socket set with a 5.5 mm socket (not common in many sets. Craftsman does make one they sell "loose") to skin out a dash. I buy the 5.5mm sockets about three at a time, since they may fall off doing salvage work and it isn't worth chasing them at about three dollars each. The dash has lots of 7mm screws too.

Other interior stuff since I'm skinning out a 2000 F150 extended cab today and it's fresh in my mind:

Dropping the steering column down takes a 13mm deep well socket. First drop the "cage" around the column and then the column

The black plastic cover on the bottom of the column is secured with (3) Phillips screws, deeply recessed.

Since I got 'em next to me, here's the socket info:

Craftsman 5.5mm Easy Read Socket, 6 pt. STD, 1/4 in. drive, Item# 00934601000 Model# 34601
