Paint Issues

Well I went to do my winter wax on my 01 F150 and noticed the clear coat starting to lift on the roof an crows feet everywhere. Looks like a paint job will be coming soon. Anyone else expirenced the poor paint job on these trucks? I know the local police cars (crown vics) have serious issues with paint peeling on all their older cars (2000ish and newer)

Oh I have the same thing on my 01 Supercrew...I bought it used 4 yrs ago and since then it has developed all these little lines in the paint...It looks like someone took at razor blade and knicked the surface all over.....The only place its NOT doing it, is the roof and the 2 rear fenders....the rear fenders are fiberglass I think.....I am so pissed and Ford was of no help, only to tell me that I can have it repainted for about 5 Grand!!

Yeah i got that too, no clear left on my roof, hood almost all gone and on the tops of the fenders, but i dont blame Ford because I have a feeling that the areas that are coming off have been repainted by some hack painter, mainly because the roof looks wavy like it may be full of bondo. Got a feeling she was hail damaged before i bought it. Will find out this summer when i repaint it.

I spoke to a local body shop today which I immensly trust. I have never seen a vehicle they did look bad. The owner told me around 1999 or 2000 the Government got on all the manufacturers about the paint they were using and emmisions from them. They were forced to change. Apparently this new paint was very expensive so to cut costs they used a cheaper primer and put less coats of paint on. He quoted me $1500 for a new paint job. So this Spring I think I will repaint my truck and keep it the original red, cheaper and they don't have to pull interior out to do it. I figured a MAACO paint job would get me by for 5 years or so but would have to do it again.

I have a bought new 2002 F-150 Super Cab in Toreador Red. I just prepped it for winter in late October. The paint is fine except in the roof channels where it cracked while it was still in warranty. They offered to repaint the whole roof but said the channel cracks could come back. I hated to have the factory paint stripped off and some body shop repaint it. So I left it alone and just made sure I kept the truck waxed. Use to wax at least twice a year. For the last 4 years it's been waxed once a year in the late Fall. Today's waxes are better than the ones 10 years ago. The channel paint cracks are not much worse after 10 years. I'm in NJ so our climate is considered "temperate". We get winters and summers, but not extremes. If you bought the truck used you probably don't know how the previous owner(s) cared for the exterior.
