Last night I found a small spot on my dash and I tried to remove it. First with Tuff Stuff, which appeared to smudge the mark. Thinking it was ink I tried Goof Off. Well, what I’ve apparently done is remove the finish on the plastic. I now have a black spot.
I would have thought that the gray dash would have been molded from gray plastic.
Does Ford paint their (99, expy) dash plastic? Is touch up paint available?
I’ve run a search and found nothing on this subject.
I'd like to know an anser to that one too. I've removed and repostioned so much stuff like radios, binocs, GPS, sunglasses, compasses, thermometers, voltmeters, etc. on my dash it's got the freckles. I learned recently that the paint for the dash, console, etc. is not alcohol resistant. Don't set your single malt Glenlivet up there! Or wipe with alcohol before putting on Velcro. Clean with soap and water only.
If it bugs you to no end, they make some nice wood dash kits that dress up the dull finish that comes on the dashboard. I would never go back to the original dash after having it done on mine. Just my 2 cents.............
I purchased a can of spray paint from my Ford dealer a few years back to deal with this issue. They'll need the interior trim code found on the driver's door sticker.
We have a place here that is called Dr. Vinyl that does all kind of dash and interior panal repair. They do a great job of repairing cracks and such in dashes so I would check in your area for a place like that.
Follow up – Ford does paint their dashboards. The paint used is thin and not chemical resistant. Be carefully when cleaning. Even rubbing hard can remove the coating.
My local Ford dealer does not handle any spray paints due to shipping issues? I was directed to an auto paint store.
DuPont makes vinyl paint and has a listing for Ford interior colors. Since this is a mixed color, the match is only as good as the guy that’s mixing the paint. In my case, the color was about a half a shade light. Surface prep is soap and water, no primer required. Spray light coat(s) to cover.
The final product looks good. The surface texture is a little different, but not that noticeable.
