You're changing out the whole distributor? Well, I had the upper manifold off when I took mine out, I suppose you could do it with the manifold in place, just might be a tight fit, you'll have to do some of it by feel. Look at the dist. cap and find #1, on most caps I have seen for these it is marked right on the top of the cap. Pull the dist. cap off, and turn the engine with a wrench on the crank pulley to line up the timing mark for TDC with the rotor pointing towards the #1 cylinder position on the cap. Look carefully to see just where on the dist. the rotor is pointing, and look at the dist. housing to get a reference in your mind, or even better, if you have a digital camera, take some pictures to refer to later. Remove the electrical connector from the dist. and the hold-down bolt, and gently pull the dist. out while watching the rotor, it will turn about 3/8 of an inch because of the bevel-cut gears. Don't let the rotor move till you have made note of exactly where the rotor is pointing. Are you putting in a new rotor while you are at it, or re-using the one you have? If a new one, put it on the new dist. and turn it to exactly the same position as the old one and drop it back in the hole while holding the dist. in the same position as the old one when it came out. It should go right in, the rotor should turn back to the #1 firing position, you should be able to clamp it down and button everything back up, fire it up and adjust the timing. Have fun! -TD
my bad just the cap and rotor. too late, already done. the hardest part was fitting my hands back there to take there screws out. my dad test drove it and said he would phrase the problem "like its trying to run outa gas" but yeah, with the motor started, i pulled off a vacume hose to see what would hapen and it tried to die. does this do the same with all the vacume hoses when they are unplugged? anyway, im outa ideas. i couldnt find the multi meter, so i couldnt check sensor. im thinkin im gonna take it to my mechanic tomorrow and see what he can do.so far ive changed the act sensor, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter.
checked spark plugs,/wires, belts, fuel pump. and thing else before i give up and take it to the pro?
Oh, well. Now you know how to change the distributor if you ever need to. I would check the fuel pressure, possibly the regulator is bad, but I'd still like to make sure of the coolant temp. sensor as well. I'm starting to run out of ideas, you want to bring it out here and let me take a look at it?! -TD
Seems to have a dead spot if you romp on it at take off. Easing into it runs ok. Almost like a dead spot. Taking it to Mech friend this weekend to let him fix the oil leak at valve cover. Maybe he'll figure it out. I will check the ohms on temp sensor.
sure it runs ok for him when he eases on it, but it runs horrible for me! just when you think you get to know a truck, it goes and treats your parents better than you.
i took my baby to the mechanic last nite, he said it sounded like a clogged exhaust or somethin. it was backfiring into the air filter box? how is that possible? hes supposed to work on it this weekend.
One of the cats could be plugged, that would do it, or maybe an armadillo crawled into the tailpipe and got caught in the muffler, did your exhaust smell like barbeque the last time you drove it? Seriously, it's probably a plugged cat. converter. -TD

we pulled the bed. it took like 10 minutes to pull the bed..... after we pulled the topper and the bedliner off. i went ahead and left the topper off. im tryin to sell it so i can get a flat cover. but believe it or not, i pulled into the driveway yesterday after takin the truck to get gas, and that sucker died in the driveway. we tapped on the nuetral safety switch and it worked fine....... makes me want to hurry up and get another car so my baby can rest. but thanx for the help. im likin the way the truck stands now. it looks pretty tough.
I was looking for one, but due to my work requirements I now have a diamondplate crossbox and a full rack on it. I'll have to take new photos, it looks pretty different. -TD
