I went to add a receiver hitch to my 94' F250, but ran into a problem with the bumper being too deep (it's an Reflexxion 10" drop center bumper). Right now it looks like my only choices are a Putman Class IV (25005) or Class V (25123) or the Drawtite 41504 class IV. I will be towing a car on a trailer most of the time, hence class IV or V.
Does anyone have a hitch recommendation? The Putnam XDR is my favorite choice, although I'll probably never come close to it's ratings, and it's not cheap either.
Go to www.reeseprod.com Reese has a hitch for Fords with drop step bumpers. Dont remember what class they are. I have a Curt Magnum class 5 on mine and it's stout enough for anything I wll do with it, cost under 200 dollars. I really like the Reese Titan 2.5" reciever hitch. I don't think either of those hitches are available for drop bumpers though.
Unfortunately, Reese only offers a class 3 for a deep drop bumper, and I really need a class 4 for what I'll be towing. Curt's website does not list an appliction for the deep drop bumper for any class. So far, Putnam and EAZ-Lift have been the only MFGR with a class 4 reciever for a 10" drop bumper. Neither is available locally, so I'm worried that I'll buy it, have it shipped, and have fitment issues. Any suggestions on a good place to order a Putnam hitch from?
Check out the link that Johnsdeisel posted above. They carry all the brands and if the unit doesn,t fit properly they will pick it up and pay the freight to return it.
Thanks for the link, Johnsdeisel. That's a great site, but their prices were pretty high($238 shipped for the class IV!). I wound up calling an RV dealer here in town (why didn't I think of that first) and they had both the class 4 and 5 Putnam hitches in stock. They were also alot cheaper, $169 for the class IV which is what I decided to go with. If I need to tow more than 8k/10k WC/WD, I'll likely move up to a gooseneck or fifth wheel anyway....now I need to go shopping for a car hauler and brake controller :-)
I'm glad you found one that works for you. In the past I have ordered from hitch-web and found that their prices were less expensive than identical parts that I could buy locally. Maybe it varies from place to place.
Yes, I've already heard alot of accolades about this controller. I guess it uses an internal inertia sensor like a G-tech accelerometer. Really neat stuff. The controller on my 84' F250 actually hooks up via the ACTUAL BRAKE line! Talk about old school. The hitch should be in today so hopefully I can get that installed this evening.
