Slop in receiver hitch???

Is it just me or do the 2 1/2" Class V hitches these trucks come with have a lot of slop. I don't recall all the clunking noises with any of my previous trucks (2" receivers, Class IV). I have a couple different (2 1/2") ballmounts & all they seem to make the same clunking noises.

Is it the oem Ford hitch? What solutions have you guys come up with.

I had a lot of slop with a 2" hitch and the 2.5" bushing. I finally bought a 2.5" blue ox hitch for my WDH set up. Slop got.

My oem hitch is a 2 1/2". I'm not using the bushing. I purchased new 2 1/2" ballmounts.

The thing is I don't remember all this clunking with my previous trucks. I'm wondering if a move to a completely new hitch (like a Reese Titan, etc) will get rid of it.

Could be the difference in some brands. With the blu ox I have I had to sand the paint off to get it to go in. I take it on and off quite a bit and its still really tight.

I know an old inventor that has come out with a 2" stinger that is cut and has a bolt run through the center that he cranks the bolt tight and expands the stinger so there is no slop. He did that all to stop the clunking that folks have.

I told him to forget the 2" and build 2.5" since all the new trucks come with that size. he just has not seen the light yet. Sticking to building 2"

But apparently it's enough of a problem with all makes of trucks that he's selling the heck out of it to stop the clunking. It's not just a Ford problem

There are a bunch of hitch wobble stoppers on the market. This one works great, but they aren't making it in a 2 1/2 inch yet. I have been using it on my '99 7.3L (2" hitch) for years. Easy enough to fab one though..it's just two plates with a step in it.

Slop isn't all bad, up here in the northern tier where road salt is used it isn't uncommon for receivers to rust the hitch in place. Personally I like the plastic bushing to isolate the hitch from the receiver.

A setscrew and/or a dab of silicone will fix rattles and keep the pin hole lined up.

All hitches are not exactly the same size. Manufacturers tend to err on the side of undersized in order to make sure they fit every truck and receiver. My 2" receiver on the gas trucks rattles more than this 2.5" unit.

Agreed... I spot welded some thin sheet metal on 2 adjacent side of my 2" receivers so they fit snug in the 2-1/2 adapter.

This one won't work in our 2 1/2" receivers then?

The way I read that, it will work with your 2 1/2" receiver and a 2" drawbar stuck in it (with a 2 -> 2 1/2 adapter). If that's what you have, that's what you need. These are just two plates with a step in them squeezed together by the bolts. Very simple, but very effective. If you had to make it work with a 2 1/2" drawbar, it seems to me you could simply grind or mill the step by 1/4". Or make your own.

I really want to go up to a 2 1/2" drawbar... So looking to eliminate the slop once I do. I guess the best thing would be to call them and ask.

It doesn't look like it would be all that difficult to make one work on a 2 1/2" receiver.

It would not be difficult. I want one for a 2 1/2 draw bar too. Call them up and tell them to get busy and they will have two customers.

This is what I use on my Geny 2-1/2" ball mount. Very easy to use and gets the job done...https://www.genyhitch.com/store/84
