I have an 88 EFI 302, bone stock, very young motor rebuild, and get nowhere near those numbers. I take great care of her with the frequent oil changes, fuel, air and oil filters, a clean throttle body and some seafoam injector cleaner once in a blue moon. I do almost all hwy driving with some city on the side and I'll bet the best number I've seen with the beast since I've had her is 12 mpg. Maybe with a whole new (stock) exhaust and a new O2 sensor, I'll see an improvement, but dman I hope so. I'll let you know when I get the exhaust situated, and can put some miles on her what/if the results are.
wozxxx86, 16 mpg is good, I average right around 14 highway and 10 city...
what type of k&n filter do you have? is it the stock type or the fuel injection kit?
As far as a noticable difference goes in changing my O2 sensor, I can't say that it did anything... I think my symptoms are worse now than before:
before the change the truck would "hiccup" at idle, moreso during the hot afternoon and now after the change it coughs and sputters during acceleration.... It seems to do it more often when the A/C is running... hmmmm dunno whats wrong there
Still cant get my O2 sensor off. Been putting PBlaster on it for a week and no luck. Tried the removal crow's foot from autozone and it flexed right off with a breaker bar. Any idea's from other's who have done it?
i just used the proper sized wrench and a dead blow hammer. I dont remember how but the wrench is and im at work so i cant check, but it wasnt 1" like the O2 sockets in the parts stores.
willystyle21: I think they may have a loaner tool available at Autozone especially designed for stubborn O2 sensors and the deposit is only 15.00 dollars, I ran accross it on their website but check with your local store to be sure. I also read in my Chiltons repair manual that you may need to try removal while the pipes are hot... try running your truck to normal operating temperature but be carefull not to burn yourself... Thats what I was going to do if mine didn't come out so easily.
wozxxx86: on your K&N fuel injection kit, do you have trouble with it getting dirty with motor oil from the crankcase breather line?
Let us know how it turns out... and If and when you get it out be sure the new one has plenty of the anti seize paste on it, if not get some more... they sell those little packs for a buck.
try some good old fashion leverage. connect a long steel 3/4" or 1" pipe to a breaker bar and use a deep socket, the longer it is the better... if that doesn't do the job, I don't know what will. Your truck will have to be on tire ramps for this to work.
Last week my dad (an old mechanic) got mine out for me. He put the box end of a combo wrench around it, and locked in the box end of the next size bigger (15/16) into the open end of the 7/8 wrench, and pushed. She came right out. Thanks dad! I would have been there all day.
