torque converter drain plug???

I'm changing the trans fluid and filter in my e4od tomorrow and was wondering if the drain plug is in the front of the torque converter, like the C6? I noticed a inspection hole in the bellhousing right under the torque converter with a rubber grommet in it, is it in there on the side of the converter ? thanks for any help, anyone know how many litres of fluid theses trannys take, any oil changing tips I should know Randy

I believe there is a drain plug there. An AOD has a drain plug behind the metal plate on the front of the transmission. On my AODE(4r70w) in my 2000 CrownVic, they supposedly drained the converter when I paid Ford to change my fluid. I am pretty sure that rubber boot is how you get to it. I think the fluid capacity will depend on the vehicle it is in. You may have a auxillary cooler or other things that make the capacity vary. Most of the local autoparts stores can give you the capacity for it. If you have a Haynes manual, it will have those numbers. The owners manual should also have that info.

On my 1990 E350 motorhome with the E4OD I accessed the drain plug exactly throught the (approx 2") rubber plug at the bottom of the bell housing. If you run it right before draining the converter should have more in it. But if you are dropping the pan it doesn't really matter. I got the plug to the bottom by hit and miss on the starter, just a tick at a time. Once I could see the plug I gently turned the converter the last inch or so with a screwdriver against the plug to center it in the hole. When putting the plug back in, be careful to get it threaded straight.

Mine E4OD is supposed to takes 16 quarts for a complete change (I got 12.5 out by a complicated procedure that did not involve dropping the pan). Some will remain in the lines, valving, etc. Try to measure what comes out and then put a quart less back in until you check it.

I refilled with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF

TallPaul thanks for that info,I am dropping the pan, as well as draining the torgue converter. can you fill me in on your mobil 1 synthetic choice, do you feel it will improve tranny performance, and extended tranny life, I was just reading posts on the tranny forum about theses E4OD trannys and the comments for the most part weren't to good, I just bought this 1994 f150 with the E4OD tranny in it, and now I'm leary of it. whats your take on theses transmissions. thanks Randy

I went with Mobil 1 because it is full synthetic and hopefully a PAO (Group V) like their motor oils. It is in there a long time and takes a lot of heat. I just feel better with it. The E4OD got better over the years with '95 and up being the best. Your '94 appears to have all but one of the upgrades:http://www.baumannengineering.com/e4odinf.htm
Consider a banks Transcommand to improve shifting (bankspower.com) which is what I have and like, but maybe baumann eng's shift improver is better?

changed the fluid today, what a mess, I stripped my wheel barrel down, and used the bucket off it to catch the oil, I installed a drain plug on the oil pan after I cleaned it up, so I don't have to go through that again.I drained the torque converter, the plug was were you said TallPaul, I think it took about 15 litres of tranny fluid to fill it, I put a litre of lucas tranny treatment in it, there was a magnet in the pan that had kinda of a black graphite looking stuff stuck to it, the oil unfortunitely didn't look like it had ever been changed, theres a 100,000 mile on it, the filter looked like the original style, I was looking for a ford part number on it but couldn't find one, it just had a circle with 94 in the middle of it, which is the year of the truck, would the filter have a part # on it?, I'm hoping the previce owner would of changed the fluid atleast once. the tranny seems to work fine so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. thanks for your help

That black graphite stuff on the magnet is clutch material from normal wear. The drain plug is a great idea. I put one on my F150 the first time I changed the fluid. I had to jbweld around it to get it to stop leaking though.

clutch wear you say, oh thats what that is the bottom of the pan looked clean I even hacked the old filter apart to have a boo in side and it didn't look to bad. that drain plug I put in was made by B&M probably most parts store carry them, with this tranny having the miles it does on it I will be changing the fluid a little more often.so that plug will come in handy

My plug was B&M too, it leaked. It was a small drip, but it always kept a drip on the bottom of the plug. It doesn't leak now. I hate leaks, no matter how small.

I used RTV gasket glue when I installed the plug hasn't leaked yet, I put one on my sons truck the same way a few months back, it doesn't leak either.Has anyone installed an exterior oil filter on their transmission, would that put stress on the oil pump in the transmission, pumping oil through two filters? I think that kit has a temp gauge option, I'm not sure if theres any need for the temp gauge unless I guy was pulling something
