2003 E-150, 4R70W transmission fluid change. There is no drain plug for the torque converter. About 6 quarts is drained when the pan is dropped. Capacity is 13.9 quarts per owners manual. A fluid change that replaces less than half the fluid seems somewhat less than ideal to me. I don't like taking the truck to a shop to do who knows what to it. What do you guys do?
It's quite simple, and I've always found it to involve less fussing around than dropping the pan. You use the cooler lines to pump out the transmission, then refill and repeat a few times. This is essentially the same thing that's done when you pay a shop to flush your transmission.
I have used this procedure a number of times on my '88 E250. I use 2 people. I person poring in ATF the whole time while the other id running the trans through the different gear selections. I have to be careful though since the ATF usually pumps out faster than it can be filled through the dipstick. Due to this I usually have to turn the van off a few times while doing it. Just keep going until you have used the correct amount of ATF and the fluid pumping out is bright red.
