98 Explorer Electrical Problem

I've got a 98 Explorer with a 4.0 SOHV and 120K miles. It seems that my charging system isn't working - the battery holds a charge but after use it gets drained. I haven't hooked the voltmeter to it yet though. Does the charging system on these trucks have a separate voltage regulator or is it built into the alternator? If I have to replace the alternator is there anything else besides the serpentine belt I should think about doing - idlers, water pump ....

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Check the voltage at the battery with your voltmeter, should be approx 14 volts with engine idling. If you are good there i will see if I can round up a link (I know i have it bookmarked somewhere) that tells how to test for "parasitic drain" that will discharge your battery. With these newer electronic marvels there is a special procedure for this.

You may consider replacing your idler on the serpentine belt. Mine spit itself off at 70K. Potential for cats-***-tropy if it flys off at speed. (radiator, fan, hood, front cover, battery, imagine the chaos of that thing hitting the fan if you loose it at 6000rpm)
