1992 Explorer Not Charging

I'm back. I have no problem with the truck starting now. Fires up every time with a charged battery. Now though, It seems my alternator is not charging, well I know my alternator is not charging. My question is: How does the alternator charge the battery, by this I mean, How does it get to the battery? Is it routed through a fuse somewhere? Any help would be appriciated.

Yes there is a wire that goes through the charging system and to the battery. Parts of the charging system have fuses and others don't. This is the simple answer but I would say that if your alternator isn't charging then it needs to be changed. You can take it by the local parts store and (O'rielly's, Advanced, etc) and have it tested. Your charging system consists of the battery, alternator, voltage regulator and starter. Does this help?

On the rear of the alt, you willl find a large lead (#8 to #6) AWG connected to a 1/4 inch terminal with a nut. This is the charge output . This lead goes back and connects to one side of the starting solenoid on the fenderwell. What is not readily apparent, is that this lead is spliced to a piece of #12 AWG "Fuse Link" cable just before it connects to the solenoid. This fuse link protects the circuit from overcurrent just like a fuse, but is much higher current tolerant than a fuse would be. If something major shorts out, the fuse link cable is burnt open and disconnects the battery from the charge output. If this happens, you will need to splice a new section of fuse link cable into the lead. It can be purchased from almost any shop that specializes in starter/alernator repairs.
Been there and done that.

This is how I test my alternator and battery. Take a multimeter to the battery. Should be at least 12 volts if not battery MIGHT be bad. Then start the engine if jumps to at least high 13 point whatever volts your alternator is good if no jump or very little jump alternator is bad.

had the same problem with my '01... turns out, there's a wire that runs from the alternator that tells the vehicle to accept a charge. Replaced that and all was good.
