windshield installation

I just had a pro auto glass installer put my new windshield and rear slider window in my 79 F150 today. I furnished the glass and gaskets for them to install, ones that I had bought 3 years ago, and I had them stored away.. When it came time to put them in, I asked them if they used any type of sealer to seal around the rubber glass gaskets, they said no, it wasnt necessary with the type gaskets the 79 Ford uses.

I remember well that 4 years ago, when I took the truck apart, that right over the windshield glass above the steering wheel , on the cab lip outside, a lot of rust had formed between where the cab roof windshield lip and the windshield met , right under the gasket. To me, that showed that water was being trapped against the metal cab roof lip , between the windshield gasket and the metal lip that it sit on. ... The installers were nice guys, and they did a nice job out in the 92 deg heat for me, so I said no more to them about the possible use of a gasket sealer.

They had to put the gasket on the windsheild glass, insert a rope cord in it, then sit the glass and gasket in the opening, then they pulled the cord out of the gasket from the inside of the cab window, allowing the rubber gasket to roll inward and flatten out on the inside the cab window opening. So having to use this method of installation, I could see where the pre-use of a gasket sealer at that time , would have made a mess of my new paint job. So, in retrospect, would the use of a sealer under the glass rubber gaskets have been right or wrong ? ? Is it something I need to do now, to insure no more water is trapped under the rubber gaskets on the upper sides of the glass gaskets ?? Or should I leave a sleeping dog lie ? I am clueless in lexington, thanks guys

Believe there is an article on window installation in the tech forum you may want to review. Also, suggest running a search. Recall FTE member FORDBOYpete responding to a post and describing window installation. Do not remember his mentioning using a sealant, but suggest review.

good luck,
dave
