92 Won't go into 4WD problem...

I have a 92 XLT 4x4 AT 4.0, 143K miles. It has the '4wd' and 'low range' push buttons on the dash. When I push the 4wd button, the lights on the button and instrument cluster come on, but I don't think it's engaging. When I try and put it in low range, nothing (no lights) come on. All the 4wd stuff worked last winter. Any/all ideas on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does anyone know of a knowledgeable repair shop in the Balt Md area that is good with 4wd problems??

check that the transfer case motor is engaging the transfer case. check out http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/exp.html for ideas. very common for the shift motor to get dirty and need cleaning.

first make sure the transfer case is working this can be done by placing the vehicle on jackstands putting it in 4-wheel drive and watching the front drive shaft to make sure it turns. if the driveshaft is turning but the wheels aren't turning the problem is in the hubs. If the 4-wd actually works with the wheels off the ground make sure all the tires are the same size.
