Sorry to say this, but in my limited experience the oil pump is usually not the cause of low oil pressure. The problem is usually excessive clearance in the bearings. I hope you luck out and the problem is the pump itself. Be sure to install a new pickup screen while you are at it. Low pressure can be caused by a clogged screen.
other posts indicate when gauge is erratic and oil is not circulating properly and this engine has around 100k to 150k then it is the crap on the screen and in oil pan generally. so i am replacing pump, shaft to dist and screen and cleaning everything else out.
picked up this truck for a very good price because of the erratic oil pressure.
it may be something else. oil pressure is ok for first 5 minutes or so, then lifters start ticking.
i am aware that oil gauge in some fords are idiot lights.
i got the oil pan out, no small feat in itself, and the oil strainer looked pretty nasty.
i could see some places where oil would go through, but i could take a screwdriver into the part with the cover over the screen and got solid sludge.
i am going to buy a new oil pump and strainer and oil pan gasket.
should i buy any of this from ford? maybe the gasket?
i am trying to decide if i need a high volume oil pump. will it really be neccessary?
it is twice the cost.
i am going to try to clean out anything that i can while pan is off like the passageways to the top of the engine.
