In the process of replacing the oil pan gasket as well as the
oil pump. The oil pump is a Clevite replacing it because I'm there.
Clevites web site says to prime the pump "submerge it in clean oil
cover the inlet of the pump and turn the pump by hand until you see oil flow from the outlet". (Is it that simple?) Add some oil through
oil filter(after installation)?
I have read in other posts that installers dis-assemble the new pumps
and coat the gears with vaseline. After the pan is in a "dummy" distributor shaft is then used to turn the pump priming the system.
Any one have a recommendation? The thought of no lubrication makes me shudder ....
Side note(Might help someone down the road): I did'nt take the time to really look where the oil leak was coming from. I made the wrong assumption that it was the rear main seal. Now the truck has a new one , +clutch,+fresh tranny and transfer case fluid + shift rail plugs.
Thanks,
Ray

just put a pump in sat. it's that simple. just make sure you use the gasket between the pump and the strainer , and one between the pump and the block. don't want it sucking air. on start up just watch your gauge it should start building pressure in just a couple of seconds.
