Can anyone tell me about the sheetmetal cover that is located on the under side of the intake manifold of a 352? I am cleaning it up and would like to remove it but I am not sure how. Does it pry off? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks!
It is attached to the under side of the intake. It is aprox. 7x14 with a couple of what looks like round head rivets holding it there. I am not talkink about the larger 10x18 piece that lays underneath it. I already have the heads off and that piece out and cleaned up as I am doing rings and bearings as well.
I would listen to Randyb12 and fordman. Try to clean it. Maybe hot tank it or take it off some how. Or how about a new RPM edel intake since it is off. Look to ebay for some deals even the performer would be bette than what you are running and lighter too. Good luck..
They were held on by a threaded rivit. You can tap out those holes and use bolts to put it back on, if you wish. I did not re-install mine when it came back from the machine shop nice and clean.
Yes, I don't know where that got started but you read all over the net that the shield is for keeping hot oil off the bottom of the intake for thermal reasons, not so. The shield is to keep the oil off the very hot bottom of the intake and breaking down. Ever pull an intake off a hot running engine? You'll find golf ball size chunks of coal in the lifter valley from oil cooking under the intake and breaking down.
When I pulled the sheild off, there were some good size chunks of carbon setting in there. It makes sense that you want to keep the oil as cool as posible. I ended up using "oven- cleaner ", to get the burnt on stuff off from it. There really wasn't any sludge as in other areas, just carbonized oil!
when i pulled mine off, i was amazed how much crap was in there, not only carbon burnt on, but chunks of crap in there, i also used oven cleaner, it actually worked better than my gas sprayer, i wonder how long it takes to get all that carbon built up in there.
